College Security Guard Hasnt Been Home in More Than a Decade - So Students Took Care of It

James Mogaji is a familiar face on the fourth floor of the Raymond Hall dormitory at Providence College. As a security guard, he spends four overnight shifts a week watching out for the students. But now? The students are looking out for him. After learning that it's been 11 long years since he's seen his family, including his son, the college students banded together to make it happen. Because everyone deserves the chance to go home again. Students Rally for “One of Their Own”Freshman Brandon Reichert is the brainchild behind operation "Send James Home." In the golden age of GoFundMe campaigns, he decided to leverage the platform to help one of his own. When he shared his idea with his classmates and friends, they immediately jumped on board. "For those of you that don't know James, he truly is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. He greets everybody with a smile and always welcomes conversations no matter what time of the night you run into him," Brandon wrote on the page. "He does not know how much we appreciate him, and hope that this shows to him how much he means to our community," he added. The fundraiser took off. In less than 24 hours it reached its goal of $3500. To say it's blown past its initial goal is an understatement. It currently sits at a whopping $26,000 (and climbing).Over the past weekend, the students got the chance to surprise James with the incredible news that he is finally going home. And all I want to know is, who's cutting the onions? Emotional TikTok Goes ViralLeah Quinn, a friend of Brandon's mother, captured the heartwarming moment on video and uploaded it to her TikTok account @lkquinnco. "Please stop and take the time to watch and share this amazing display of unrelenting kindness and humanity at its best," she wrote in the post. More than 750,000 people listened.Surrounded by students, resident assistant, Daniel Singh delivered the news to an unsuspecting James. "You told us a while ago that you wanted to see your family in Nigeria that you haven’t seen in a long time, so we came together and spread the word, and we started a GoFundMe because we take care of our own because that’s what we do at Providence College," he told James, fighting back tears."They've done that for me, we've done that for each other, so now we're doing it for you. You're part of the family, so our gift to you is a trip to Nigeria."Daniel Singh via TikTokShocked and overcome with emotion, James covered his face with his hands and fell to his knees. Clearly, the students didn't just gift him a trip, they gave him the world.“I don’t know how much I can thank you guys, man. I don’t know how much I can thank you,” he cried. He's going to start by taking the trip, which is already booked for June.As for the rest of the money raised? The students don't want James to have to wait another 11 years. They plan on using it for many more trips in the future. The Kids Are All RightJames is there for these kids, at a time when they need him most. A time when they've left everything they know behind - their childhoods, their families, their homes. And his presence hasn't gone unnoticed. It's obvious that James has made a difference in these students' lives. So much so, that they were willing to do whatever they could to make a difference in his.The fact that these kids came together in an incredible outpouring of community and compassion is inspiring. And despite what critics of the next generation may be saying, it's proof that kids these days? Are all right. Man Spends His $400 Paycheck on Poor Nephew Who Had No Toys - 15 Years Later, He Has the Perfect Payback'

As a parent, there's nothing you want more than to see your children happy and smiling. You want to give them the world — even if you're not in a financial position to do so. This is just one example of the ancient philosophy of "hoi sum" — the Cantonese word for "open heart." "Hoi Sum: the common phrase to describe being happy in Cantonese. But more literally it means 'open heart.'"Steven Elliot NgWhen a poor family could only provide for the essentials for their children growing up, one big hearted family member stepped in — and his efforts made all of the difference. His generosity was never forgotten. Little did he know, his selfless act of kindness would pay off in the most unimaginable way, 15 years later. In a heartwarming Facebook post, the Elliott Havok Founder recalled the harsh reality of his tough childhood; needless to say, this is one rags-to-riches story that will melt your heart. Growing Up Poor: He Never Had a Toy of His OwnBefore he was on the cover of Forbes 30 Under 30, Stephen Elliot Ng was just a young boy, with big dreams and no clear cut path to make them come true. Growing up in a poor town in China, Steven knew he wasn't in the same boat as the other kids his age. For one, Steven's parents had so little to offer their children financially, they could barely afford to keep their family afloat. While Steven never resented this and was grateful for all his parents provided, like any kid his age, he wished one day that he too could have a toy of his own to play with. When you're just a kid, even if you're smiling on the outside, that doesn't always reflect how you feel on the inside. It's easy to think you're fooling everyone into thinking you're okay even if you're not, but one close family member was paying more attention than Steven could have ever imagined.Steven's uncle struggled to find a job in the competitive and cutthroat economy, but he vowed when he did, his first order of business would be giving his two nephews a gift they'd never forget. Despite the incredible challenges, this uncle decided to take matters into his own hands — and it's an action that left a lasting impression on Steven and his brother. His Month’s Salary Was $400When Steven's uncle finally managed to nail a job down — it wasn't most people's idea of "success."After working a full time job, his monthly salary amounted to a meagre $400 dollars (that shakes out to a shocking $0.80 an hour). Yet, despite the horrific pay for the hard labor, Steven's uncle toiled day and night with one purpose in mind — and it's not the one you'd think.Instead of trying to save his pennies and put food on his own table, Steven's uncle had a bigger feeling put on his heart, and he was determined to make it happen one way or another.A Gesture He’d Never Forget — “It Was Pretty Much the Ultimate Gift”In the early 2000's, the PS2 was all the rage! Who could forget that glorious black gaming console every kid wanted to get their hands on? With hours and hours of endless on-screen fun, the state of the art gift was at the top of every kid's Christmas wish list — except Steven's.For Steven, a "playstation" was the kind of gift he could only dream of — he just had no idea that this was one of his dreams that would be coming true. The first of many, in fact."About 15 years ago, my uncle, who lives in China, sent my brother and I a gift— a PS2. It was pretty much the ultimate gift, especially considering we did not get any toys growing up. With an open heart, he spent a whole month's salary ($400, yeah we were poor as f**k) just to make us happy."Steven Elliott Ng, Founder of Elliot HavokThe cutting edge gadget was the highlight of Steven's childhood. For a kid growing up a modest environment like the one Steven did, toys aren't just a fun escape — they're a creative outlet too. When we play, our imagination grows and when our imagination grows, we can begin to plant the seeds for the impossible.Even though it may have seemed like just a toy — for Steven the gift his uncle gave him was so much more. It represented unconditional love and the sacrifice the goes along with it and when a child grows up feeling love like that? It can be the most powerful thing. In fact, for the future tech mogul, it may have been a "game changer" — literally.15 Years Later — He Gave Him the Payback of a LifetimeIn good times and in bad, a tight knit family that struggles together, stays together. As it turns out, hard work and dreaming big was genetic in this family! As he grew up, Steven would spend hundreds of hours studying and working tirelessly day and night to build a life he was proud of. He didn't know what that life would look like or when he would get there, but he knew one day he'd return the favor his uncle gave him all those years ago. It's easy to say, his 'payback' didn't disappoint. As he was starting to build a business brick by brick, before he even became "successful," Steven's first order of business was getting his uncle back in the best way! His first big pay day went to the perfect person!"We promised him we'd return the favour for many years and today we got him a new SUV."Steven Elliott NgIt may have taken 15 years, but boy did it feel good when Steven handed his uncle the keys to a brand new SUV! Steven's hard work just goes to show, while the good things in life are rarely instant, there's no question that rolling up our sleeves and paving our own way is far more rewarding than getting our whole life handed to us (it's why grandma's homemade cookie recipe handed down for generations is better than any old store bought biscuit). His Childhood Left a Lasting ImpressionIt's no coincidence that Steven's successful business model — which would later land him a coveted feature in Forbes magazine — would be retailing luxury watches and wallets at an affordable price. It's easy to see how Steven's upbringing influenced the vision he had behind his company. Growing up, all Steven wanted was to have access to the same things everyone else his age did. He didn't think that enjoying the finer things should come with such a high price tag. As an entrepreneur, his "affordable luxury" business model was informed by his childhood and wanting to be the change he wanted to see in the world. Steven wanted to make "nice things" accessible for everyone — and it clearly paid off! Living Life With an Open HeartThe art of hoi sum — living with an open heart — reminds us we don't need to wait for unimaginable riches to start giving back to those we love. It's easy to procrastinate generosity, especially when we're looking at how little we feel we have to give. It's no secret "it's better to give than to receive," is easier said than done. However giving generously can come in many forms. It's not all cash and prizes. Giving generously can look like sitting down with your little niece and nephew and listening to them talk about their favorite princess or taking them to the park on your day off.In fact, gifts (in the traditional sense) aren't necessarily the greatest thing we have to give. More often than not, it's our time. It's the most precious thing we have, it's always running out, but spending it with others is what we remember most."Whether it's friends or family, remember why you wake up in the morning. I strive to be hoi sum. I've come to learn that being happy and having an open heart are synonymous."Steven Elliot NgThis holiday season, this family's story is a meaningful reminder of why we all could benefit by practicing the art of hoi sum!More from Goalcast:Steve Harvey Realizes His Son Has Given Him a Gift He Didn’t Pay For – But That Wasn’t All, There Was More to ComeLawyer Helps Poor Mother Who Stole Pencil Case – 25 Years Later, He Never Thought Her Son Would Track Him DownPoor 84-Year-Old Street Vendor Has Had One Dream for Decades – Wakes Up at 4:30 A.M Every Day to Fulfill It

19-Year-Old Goes to Hotel to Take Part in a Raffle - Little Did She Know Her Friends Had a Secret Plan in Place

Inside the Grand Meridian in Appleton, Wisconsin, the room went quiet as a hand pulled out a raffle ticket. Whoever’s ticket corresponded with the numbers called would walk out of the Chick-fil-A Christmas party with a new car. Unless that ticket belonged to Haley Bridges. In that case, Haley’s best friend and coworker would get the car. And that’s exactly what happened. How Two Chick-fil-A Employees Formed a Deep ConnectionPhoto by Jace MillerSeventeen-year-old Haley Bridges started working at Chick-fil-A in late August after a classmate referred her to the job. She quickly bonded with her coworkers, but she got especially close to one friend in particular.“I love working here. Not only are the people that work here amazing, but it has taught me so many new things,” Haley said. "I always look forward to going to work, I get to see my second family.”Hokule’a Taniguchi, Haley’s 19-year-old coworker, met Haley through work. By September, Hoku and Haley would hang out frequently, even outside of work.“What we do most of the time is chill at whoever’s house we choose,” said Haley. “We are very spontaneous, as well as our little close friend group we have.”How a Teen’s Observation Led to Her Best Friend’s New CarHoku rode her bike to work every day, even in winter. Haley recognized that Hoku needed the car more than she did, and Haley and her friends decided that if one of them were to win the raffle, they would gift the car to Hoku. Our friend group and some other friends decided to all put one in for her. We were all very nervous that someone else would get chosen, but we kept our hopes up.Haley BridgesThe raffle was the main event of the Chick-fil-A Christmas party every year, with rumors circling that this year’s prize was a car. The rumors were verified when Haley walked into the Grand Meridian, where the party was taking place. Displayed in the banquet hall was a car.How 5 Raffle Tickets and 1 Teenager Changed a Girl’s LifeEach employee was given raffle tickets that corresponded to the number of hours they worked. Haley had five tickets.Luckily, those five tickets were enough: Haley was announced as the winner of the grand prize.“My heart felt as if it was racing and we both stood up and ran to each other,” Haley said. Everyone in the room felt like they were gone, it felt as if it was just us two in the moment. We hugged each other hard and cried so much. Everyone else was either crying or clapping. We all had a big group hug with everyone near us and it felt so unreal experiencing this.Haley BridgesOne Teenager Proved the Importance of Being SelflessInspired by Haley’s kindness, strangers were moved to help. After Haley’s aunt organized a fundraiser, strangers donated to Haley so that she could pay off the car she already owned. As for Hoku, she is planning to move to an apartment closer to the Chick-fil-A where she works, and the car has been put to good use as Haley and Hoku have gone on many rides together in it.Though any teenager would jump at the chance to win a new car, Haley put the needs of her friend in front of her own desires. Haley is an example of a true friend, someone who cares about you enough to commit selfless acts for your benefit. Anyone is lucky to have someone like Haley looking out for them.More from Goalcast:Math Teacher Who Commutes Four Hours Every Day Gets Life-Changing Surprise from StudentsMan Notices Grandmother Raising 4 Children Alone Lives in Poor Conditions – So, He Decides to Trick Her9-Year-Old Learns Classmates Can’t Afford a Birthday Party – Responds with Selfless Gesture
