Stranger Things: There's a Reason You Love Eddie Munson - And It Isn't That Guitar Solo

* WARNING: This post contains spoilers for Stranger Things Season 4.Joseph Quinn’s portrayal of Hawkins’ alleged cult leader, Eddie Munson, struck a literal chord with old and new Stranger Things fans alike when Netflix dropped the fourth season in early summer 2022. Eddie’s devotion to the Dungeons & Dragons, struggle with running away, and his heroic Metallica performance won audiences over globally. Of course, it would have been far too easy to go another route with this character. After all, Eddie was a metalhead and drug dealer, and his friendship now rivalled -- and even threatened -- the fan-favorite bromance between Dustin Henderson and Steve Harrington. Off the bat (pun unfortunate and unintended), viewers could have had another Billy Hargrove on their hands. Billy’s racism and abuse was chilling, but also, disconcertingly realistic. But it would have been reductive to alienate the misfit metal-obsessed nerd from audiences with similar behavior.Thankfully, Eddie’s compassion, honest reluctance to deal with the supernatural chaos, and endless flirting with Hawkins’ best babysitter showed the world what Stranger Things has been highlighting all along: heroes come from the most unlikely of places.Eddie Munson Defies Small Town Prejudice - And Our Own(Photo by Netflix)Like most of Hawkins, the main characters initially doubt Eddie’s innocence when it comes to the Vecna murders. They learn in no time how wrong they were, though. Hawkins might judge him, but those who truly understand Eddie Munson -- like the Hellfire Club and his Uncle Wayne -- know better.Eddie “The Freak” Munson is an outcast through and through, which is why the townspeople paint him as a satanic cult leader with loose morals. Even before the murders, fellow classmates and peers poke fun at his interests. In some ways, his story mirrors Winona Ryder’s — sometimes, no matter what you’ve done, you can never be enough for people. At his core, Eddie resonates with so many because he's so different.RELATED: Stranger Things Is Breaking One Dangerous (And Deadly) Hollywood PatternA metal fan in the ‘80s, you might expect him to be chauvinistic or homophobic, but he’s far from it. Within minutes of dismissing Erica Sinclair as a worthy player in his campaign, he accepts her. Eddie immediately defers to Nancy Wheeler’s leadership. He is deeply committed to art but considerate. He swears by nonconformity but stands by community. Subverting expectations everywhere he goes, Eddie is a safe space for the outcast in all of us.Eddie Munson Challenges Masculine Norms with Kindness and Vulnerability(Photo by Netflix)It makes perfect sense why the internet latched on to Eddie Munson. While his interactions with the tragic Chrissy Cunningham morphed into a catchy tune that is stuck in even actor Joseph Quinn’s head, his concern over the cheerleader undeniably drew audiences into his warm gaze. Early on, he has no clue what demons Chrissy faces, but TikTok user and actor Brittany Grove’s analysis of Joseph Quinn’s body language shows how, in a single scene, Eddie effortlessly puts Chrissy at ease. That is, until Eddie soon witnesses Chrissy’s brutal murder and runs away. RELATED: Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown Has Powerful Words Against Sexualizing Her – And Hollywood Needs to ListenMany fans noted how writers foreshadowed his tendency to run, when, as Dungeon Master, Eddie tells his party, “There is no shame in running.” As beautiful as this personal philosophy is, he later expresses nothing but shame when confronting how he left Chrissy alone. Yet none of Eddie’s friends punish him for being afraid. Instead, they validate him. It's also important to note Eddie never sexualizes any female character. Not only does this challenge the norm within canon, it underlines how easy it is not to hyper-sexualize Stranger Things actresses like Millie Bobby Brown. His ability to respect women and share how he feels doesn't cancel out his personality... or that badass guitar solo. Why Eddie Munson and Steve Harrington's Relationship is Refreshing(Photo by Netflix)Rather than lean in to a predictable dynamic of macho rivalry, Joseph Quinn improvised lines hinting at Eddie having a crush on Steve Harrington. The two share a heartwarming moment in the woods amid Vecna’s mayhem where Steve comforts Eddie after they admit they were jealous of each other. This interaction matters. It matters because two monster-slaying boys set time aside to address how they feel and acknowledge the very real insecurities they had. Rather than telling each other to “man up” or put on masks of bravado, Eddie and Steve get real with themselves and each other. Honestly, romantic or not, it's refreshing to see Steve, who goes from being a people-pleasing jock to bat-swinging caretaker over the course of the show, make a friend his age.“I love you, man,” Eddie Munson says to Dustin before dying. There’s no doubt Eddie’s words will make it in the hall of fame of Stranger Things quotes. (Unsurprisingly, Joseph Quinn also improvised these last words. He's tapped into the nuance of his character with genius.)Eddie's tears or sometimes comedic screams don't undermine any of his sacrifice -- it doesn’t mean any less because of how loudly he feels. If anything, his sacrifice means more.Joseph Quinn’s Portrayal as Eddie Reveals the Importance of Found Family(Photo by Netflix)Another huge reason why Eddie matters beyond the realm of television is how his arc points to how important it is to find community. When dealing with body-snapping telepathy or more common life stressors, it's important not to feel alone. The Hellfire Club was not just a way to pass the time with D&D, but a place where outsiders could belong. (The shirts selling out shows just how much viewers can relate.)The truth is, it wasn’t just Eddie who was stuck in a box society created for him. He openly shares his misguided first impressions with the Hawkins gang, from Erica’s youth to doubting Steve’s good nature. The difference between him and a character like Billy or Jason is his ability to accept when he’s wrong. He even accepts these new characters as his friends. Even with a whole community against him, he held compassion for “lost sheep” until the very end.RELATED: 11 Stranger Things Quotes to Turn Your Life Upside DownEddie Munson tugs at so many hearts because of his own. Fans celebrate him not in spite of his eccentricity, quips, or quirks, but because of them. Despite the town's opinions of him, he stays kind and spreads the gospel of good music motivation through all kinds of danger. It’s no wonder the Stranger Things fandom is pumping out theory after theory on how he could return. Whether he does or not, one thing is for certain: Eddie Munson comforts and inspires anyone who’s ever felt like they were “too much.” Never change and rest in peace, Eddie.KEEP READING:What Wes Anderson’s ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’ Taught Us About Finding Humor in Trauma and Dysfunction

Hard Trivia Questions for Your Next Game Night

People love trivia, that’s just a fact. That explains the popularity of long-running shows like Jeopardy or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and countless volumes of trivia books. And for that, they require hard trivia questions for the next big game night.RELATED: Questions to Ask Your Crush to See if They're Worth PursuingBut how do you plan the best trivia night for your friends? Paul Rudd Vs. Wilford Brimley: Why Do People in the Past Look So Much Older Than Us?

If you type “Paul Rudd Wilford Brimley” into Google Image, you'll be met with dozens of side-by-side photos comparing Ant-Man star Paul Rudd and Cocoon actor Wilford Brimley when they were 51 years old. The contrast is striking. In his early 50s, Rudd could easily pass for a man a decade younger, while Brimley at 51 could be mistaken for someone in his 70s. RELATED: Paul Rudd and Wife Julie Yaeger Are Hollywood's Most Un-Hollywood CoupleWhy is there such a marked discrepancy? As it turns out, there are myriad reasons. The most notable might be that, in the Rudd vs. Brimley comparison, the images of the latter were taken in 1985 during the filming of Cocoon.Brimley, who passed away in 2020, was born in year 1934. Rudd, on the other hand, was born in 1969. Had the two shared a birth year, perhaps they would have looked more like peers in their early 50s. However, part of the reason people in the past look so much older than we do today, even at the same age, is because, biologically speaking, they were older.People Are Aging More Slowly Than EverPaul Rudd in Only Murders in the Building Season 2 (2022)The average life expectancy of an American over the past 170 years has trended, dramatically, toward longer life. Looking at data compiled by Statista, average life expectancy in the United States was a mere 40 years in 1860. However, by the early 1900s, it had risen to 50. Fast-forward to the mid-1960s, the average had surpassed 70 years. Today, it's 80.To live longer, people had to live healthier. Much of that was due to improving medical-treatment options and a greater understanding of disease, aging and immunity. Diet had to improve was well. Another important factor was the reduction of harmful habits like smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol. Add to that the tendency to get more exercise and recreation. It’s also difficult to overstate the importance of preventive measures like wearing sun block and protective clothing have on health and appearance.Paul Rudd and Wilford Brimley Weren't the Same Biological AgeWilfred Brimley in Cocoon (1985)When you lead a healthier life than you predecessors, your body shows it. People today really do look younger than those of the same age from generations past. That's because they are in better shape, right down to their very cells. Skin protected from sun damage ages more slowly. RELATED: Your "True" Age May Not Be Your Birth DateA body nourished with good foods doesn't break down as quickly, with stronger bones and a better ability to heal and maintain itself. Simply put, the biological age of two people separated by many decades (say, Paul Rudd and Wilford Brimley) is likely not the same, even when the two were, in calendar years, the same age.But biological age is not the only reason people in the past look older than we do today. Perception also plays a role. There could also be called bias at play. Why Do People Look So Much Older in Photos from the Past?Photo from Suzy Hazelwood, from PexelsIt's not only photos. People from the past look older in movies, too. Even in audio recordings, people sounded older. Or did they? When it comes to the voices of people from the past, that “old-timey” sound has more to do with recording equipment than it does with their voices. Earlier generations of recording hardware couldn't capture nearly as wide a range of frequencies as we can today. Thus, many overtones were lost, especially lower bass tones. RELATED: Classmates Refuse to Sign Bullied Boy's Yearbook - Then Paul Rudd Stepped InVoices sound less rich and melodic have an almost awkward higher pitch that does, indeed, sound older and out of date. So, the guy announcing the horse race or the fellow reporting on the Hindenburg disaster? They didn't actually sound like that. But as for why people in "classic" photos and films look so much older? That's likely, as we have discussed, because they were older, at least in biological terms. A poorer diet, more direct exposure to the sun, smoking, drinking and other factors may well have aged them. Another factor is that, despite being objectively less-healthy, people in past generations did tend to be trimmer on the whole. And a more slender face looks older than a plump face, while thinner bodies more prominently show bones, veins and the like, which can make someone appear older. In the Battle of Brimley vs. Rudd, Cut Wilford Some SlackWilford Brimley in The Firm (1993)Finally, consider this. Your mind is trained to associate black-and-white images, or grainy color, with age. If you see a photo of your grandfather at age 18 next to one of you at 18, he will likely look older. But now view that photo of yourself with a black-and-white filter (or a grainy color filter), and chances are you too will look older in the altered image.Want to take things a step further? Colorize the image of the person from the past. He or she will suddenly seem younger. The same goes for the clothing. Fashion from, say, the 1950s is destined to look antiquated, even in a modern setting. And one more note. While Wilford Brimley definitely looked older than Paul Rudd at 52, do note that the character he played in Cocoon was "aged up" with makeup so he could later appear younger, as required by the script. So, let’s give Wilford a break, Rudd’s seemingly eternal youth not withstanding.KEEP READING: Here Are Myths About Aging You Shouldn't Believe If You Want a Better Life

The 10 Best Vin Diesel 'Family' Memes That Are Heartwarming AND Hilarious

The Fast & Furious franchise boasts nine films in its core line, with a 10th, Fast X, arriving in theaters theaters in May 2023. Over more than two decades, the Universal Pictures movies have thrilled audiences with car chases, gravity-defying stunts, edge-of-your-seat action. They're also filled with a surprising number of references to family, primarily by protagonist Dom Toretto. It's little wonder, then, that Vin Diesel family memes have become practically a cottage industry.RELATED: Vin Diesel & Paul Walker Were More Than Just Friends, They Were BrothersWhat’s such a delight about the Dom memes is that most are not only amusing, but also heartwarming in their own way. They perfectly fulfill the prime directive of a meme. Namely, rapidly expressing an idea based on the use of quickly recognized images with the addition of text. However, these are, for the most part, upbeat -- a pleasant contrast from the snark so often associated with memes. What Is the Vin Diesel Family Meme? It’s exactly what you expect, really. It's nothing more than Diesel’s Fast and Furious character, added to image from other movies, TV series, or even ads. Dom Toretto responds to the situation at hand with some words about -- you guessed it -- family. Dom may save the day on behalf of family. He may strike someone down in the name of family. He may reply in a way that’s totally nonsensical, but also quite funny, because… family quotes.Examples of Vin Diesel’s 'Fast and Furious' Family MemesLet’s take a look at 10 of the best family memes that are both amusing and, in their own way, touching. Five Sad and Heartbreaking Anime That Will Hit You Right in the Feels

Transformers: The Movie traumatized a generation of young viewers raised on the animated weekday adventures of the robots in disguise. Kids accustomed to the consequence-free rivalry between the Autobots and the Decepticons suddenly were confronted with the big-screen slaughter of Optimus Prime and his allies. For many, the 1986 film served as a gateway to more mature content found in the mainstream anime that had migrated from Japan to the United States. However, the emotional gut-punch of the death of Optimus Prime pales in comparison to some of the saddest anime.RELATED: Inspirational Anime Characters That Are Absolutely Perfect for Each OtherHere are just some of the most profoundly devastating anime in the history of the medium. Robotech to the Emotional Depths of Sad AnimeRoy Fokker in RobotechA year before the release of Transformers: The Movie, fighter pilot Roy Fokker died a heroic death in Robotech, the anime series created for U.S. release by stitching together five Japanese shows.RELATED: 120 of the Best Anime Quotes of All TimeHowever, Roy was a supporting character. And, although his loss in the episode "Farewell, Big Brother," was more visceral, it was also less resonant. Robotech nevertheless established for its young audience that anime took greater risks than American animated series, which at the time were largely used to market toys. Lynn Minmei was introduced as protagonist Rick Hunter's love interest. However, despite how much the series devotes to their implicit courtship, the two are not destined to be together. The space opera is encased in layers of uncertainty, eschewing convention with rigid discipline, resulting in greater nuance and unexpected emotional reactions. In the tradition of the best, and saddest, anime, Robotech invited viewers into the minds of its characters by incorporating inner-dialogue into the narrative. The series never flinched in its depictions of war, and often framed its pursuit in allegorical terms full of dissident iconoclasts and a duty-sworn military apparatus. The potential loss of civilization loomed large in Robotech, at a time when nuclear destruction was a very real fear.Berserk Featured the Most Heartrending Betrayal in AnimeBerserkToday, Berserk exists in multiple iterations, all based on Kentaro Miura's renowned dark-fantasy manga. Debuting in 1997, the original anime consisted of 25 episodes, 23 of which followed the exploits of mercenaries known as the Band of the Hawk. The main character, Guts, was a sword for hire who drifted from one battle to the next, devoid of any nurtured aspirations. The band's leader, Griffith, eventually evaluates Guts' battle prowess, and he's brought into their service. This somewhat-involuntary initiation resolves over the course of their collaboration into true respect and friendship. After many decisive victories, the Band acquits itself as a significant force in the regional political landscape. Guided by the tactical brilliance of Griffith's second-in-command, Casca, the Band is loyal to their leader -- to the point of zealotry. However, Griffith's ambitions and momentary lapse of judgment brand them as outlaws, which results in his capture and subsequent torture. Griffith is little more than a tongueless husk when the Band rescues him a year later. Still, the mercenaries swear to fight in his name, and protect him with their lives.RELATED: 15 Amazing Female Anime Characters and What Your Favorite Says About YouA quartet of powerful demons selects Griffith to become its fifth member, but only if he sacrifices his loved ones. He not only accepts their offer, he also assaults Casca while Guts is forced to watch. Guts loses an eye and a forearm in the struggle but is unable to stop his former leader. The series ends with Guts vowing revenge and setting off into the wild to exact his penance. As brutal as the dismemberment of the Band of the Hawk is, Casca's assault is stomach-churning. Guts saved Griffith from unending torment only moments earlier. And now he's repaid for his loyalty with unspeakable atrocities. The shift takes place over the final two episodes, and nothing in Berserk to that point suggested that Griffith was capable of such treachery. Granted, Griffith always made clear he would let nothing stand in the way of his desires. But this evil moment is beyond anything the audience was prepared for. It remains one of the most reprehensible acts in fiction. Basilisk Is Romeo & Juliet Meets Hunger Games, Only SadderBasiliskA centuries-long feud between two ninja clans, the Iga and the Kouga, ends in Basilisk only after they're forced into an uneasy truce beneath the shogun's banner. But when a succession dispute ignites between his two grandsons, the old shogun tries to impose stability by arbitrarily assigning a clan to each of them. The last clan standing will determine who seizes the mantle of leadership. RELATED: These Disney “Failures” Prove Your Idea of Success May Be WrongGennosuke and Oboro, the chiefs of the Iga and Kouga, respectively, are engaged to one another. Their connection represents hope that centuries of animosity can be set aside. However, the competition between 10 of the best ninja from each family goes on without their knowledge. That is, until the mounting body count becomes impossible to ignore. Once Gennosuke and Oboro become aware, they must go along with the contest, or else risk the futures of their clans.Basilisk unveils its merciless format in the first episode as, one by one, each of the primary characters is slaughtered in combat. Finally, only Gennsuke and Oboro remain. In honor of their love for one another, they refuse to fight. However, Oboro won't doom what remains of her clan. She turns her blade on herself to spare Gennsuke from making a similar decision. He, in turn, commits suicide so might reunite with his true love, in a realm far from war. Fullmetal Alchemist Is the Saddest Family Drama of All TimeFullmetal AlchemistEdward and Alphonse Elric are two brothers who lose their mother to illness. In the world of Fullmetal Alchemist, alchemy is an established scientific discipline with concrete rules that revolve around the principle of equivalent exchange. This maxim is both a narrative engine and a thematic cornerstone of the series. The two young prodigies use their academic understanding to attempt a forbidden rite, human transmutation, in an effort to resurrect their mother. RELATED: Walt Disney’s Life Story: A Mouse, Eternal Life, and a Stolen RabbitThe botched experiment consumes Alphonse's body, as well as Edward's left leg. Edward sacrifices his right arm in the process, to attach his brother's soul to an empty suit of armor. Edward is so guilt-stricken that he spends the rest of the series attempting to recover Alphonse's lost body. Sacrifice, and the power it represents, are central to Fullmetal Alchemist's themes. Children are abandoned in pursuit of technological advancement, and genocide is a tool of indigenous vengeance. Every action is balanced by counterweight of repercussions that ripple throughout the series. The Elric brothers find a measure of redemption and healing through their good works and passionate pursuit of the truth. Grave of the Fireflies May Be the Saddest Movie of All TimeGrave of the FirefliesUnlike the other entries on this list of saddest anime, Grave of the Fireflies is a film instead of a series. Nevertheless, it crafts more heartache in its 89 minutes than all of the other titles combined. The movie is based on the childhood of Akiyuki Nosaka, an artist and politician who lived through World War II. His short story of the same name inspired the cinematic adaptation, written and directed by Isao Takahata, with some notable distinctions. RELATED: 20 Sad Movies on Netflix That Make You Appreciate What You HaveGrave of the Fireflies begins with the narrator, a boy named Seita, describing the date of his death. The audience watches his emaciated form, leaning on a pillar of a railway platform. The entire film is a flashback to how he wound up alone and discarded in a train station during the final days of the war. With his father serving in the Japan's navy, Seita must care for his ailing mother and 4-year-old sister, Setsuko. His mother then dies in an air raid, ieaving Seita to watch after his sister. They travel to the home of their aunt, who's resentful of their presence and objectively cruel. Seita discovers a pair of man-made caves nearby, and convinces himself he can provide Setsuko with everything she needs. The two children set out for an adventure that reveals itself to be an exercise in misplaced hubris. Setsuko's bright energy is animated with all of the authenticity and innocence inherent to a toddler. Grave of the Fireflies never blinks as it examines her dimming buoyancy under the rigors of starvation. Seita is willing to do anything to keep his sister alive, but neither his thieving from local farmers nor the burglary of their neighbors during frequent aerial bombings is enough to support them. Sestuko's subsequent death is all the more tragic because it's wholly unavoidable. They spend their nights in laughter among the fireflies. However, Seita never confronts the hard truth: He could have gone back to his aunt's home at any time. The children's decay is marked by triumphs among hardships, and an incredible devotion shared in their suffering. Watching them succumb to the quiet horrors of war is more shocking than the whistling bombs that serve as the dirge of their short lives. Netflix's The Circle Is a Dangerous Game - But It Reveals a Deeper Truth About Modern Relationships

Netflix has been on a reality-show kick, and viewers have been loving the streaming giant's original series. There's no shortage of bingeable competition series, but one of the most successful to date is The Circle. It's a game of popularity in which contestants put their social media skills to the test in order to win money at the end.RELATED: How True Is Netflix’s Monster to the Real Jeffrey Dahmer Story? There are plenty of interesting twists in The Circle to catch a player off-guard, and lead to their departure. However, what really keeps players in the game are their connections. So, let’s talk about past seasons of The Circle, which approaches seemed to work best, and what we can learn from the premise of this Netflix reality show. How Do You Play Netflix’s The Circle? The Circle is a social-media competition where your ranking among others determines the future of your stay there. Upon entering, you’re set up in an isolated apartment with voice-recognized screens around the house. You can choose to come in as yourself, or as a catfish, using another identity.RELATED: Netflix’s ‘How to Change Your Mind’ Says Drugs Are the Answer – Are They Right?Every season there are numerous catfish who come in for different reasons. Some men who come in as women have claimed it’s because women are more trustworthy and can make deeper connections faster. However, some women who come in as men believe playing the flirting angle will be their saving grace. There are also some players who choose to go as someone else because they don’t believe they could otherwise become well-liked enough to win. That sheds some light on some deeper issues caused by social media. The purpose of the game is to form meaningful connections. Whether those are strategic or genuine friendships is up to players. But the connections are your ticket to the finale. There are rankings that determine your status moving forward, until the next one. The two highest-ranked players then become influencers, and ultimately decide who’s going home. These rankings can be completed genuinely in regard to who you like the most and least, but they can also be used as sabotage. The purpose of The Circle is to be liked, an ode to a sad social-media truth in our real lives. But the question remains regarding which strategy worked best in the past. Let’s look at the winners, and what they’ve done to secure their win -- and the cash. The Winners of The CircleSeason 1 is arguably still the best, as the players had no idea what the game would become, and which strategies were available. Joey Sasso was in the first batch of players, and he was the last man standing. He walked into the finale with only one catfish and four other individuals who also played as themselves. Sasso’s strategy from the start was to not have one at all, and that worked for him excellently. It could be debated that he's the most well-received player on The Circle so far. His unwavering loyalty to his connections was admirable and ultimately is what led to his victory.Season 2’s winner was Deleesa St. Agathe, who catfished as her husband Trevor. Unlike the previous season, St. Agathe wasn’t the only catfish in the finale, but rather one of three. This season featured Chloe Veitch, who was previously on Netflix’s Too Hot To Handle. She was a fan favorite on both shows. However, St. Agathe’s win was well-deserved, as few suspected she wasn’t who she said she was. She had a fake relationship with Veitch throughout their journey on The Circle, clearly taking the flirting route. While she may have been strategic in her means to an end, St. Agathe still found lasting friendships. Her win proves that not everyone is who they say they are online, and it’s up to us to decipher if what we see is real. Once again, that brings up a more dangerous side of social media that we sometimes fail to remember.RELATED: Netflix at 25: How Streaming Changed the Way We Have Sex, Fall in Love & Live Our LivesThe third season, quite frankly, feels like a fever dream. There were many more unexpected surprises that kept viewers on our toes, including a player having two profiles at one point. The finale included two catfish, but James Andre Jefferson Jr. chose to play as himself, and took home the money. He came into The Circle thinking with his head, but he acted with guidance from his heart. That's what allowed him to move up in the rankings so quickly. Jefferson was one of the later entries, but still managed to make enough connections to sustain him through his short stay.Season 4 was released this year, in May 2022. Its finale was interesting, as the only catfish present was Trevor St. Agathe. This name might ring a bell, because his wife, Deleesa St. Agathe, won Season 2 using his identity. St. Agathe joined the game in the later stages, and entered as his wife’s friend, Imani. The season's winner, Frank Grimsley, wasn't a surprise. He came into The Circle with every intention of being his authentic self, and that’s exactly what propelled him to the very end. He was well-loved for being open, transparent and supportive. It was his ability to forge friendships that gave him an edge. What We Can Learn From Netflix’s The CircleAfter dissecting the winners of Netflix's The Circle, it’s safe to say that, in general, friendship over strategy seems to win. It’s clear that people can sense authenticity, even through a screen – for the most part, that is. The show may be a game of popularity, but there’s an underlying theme that rings true in our real-life social media experience.RELATED: You Might Turn into Netflix’s Most Toxic ‘Never Have I Ever’ Character – Unless You Make One Big ChangeMuch of what we see online isn’t what we think. Friendships are exaggerated, faces and bodies are altered, and the lives portrayed are edited intentionally to be unrealistic. While we’d like to believe everyone we encounter online is genuine, that’s just not the case. Social media can be dangerous in that it can lead to insecurity about our own lives and appearances. It can even be more dangerous when we think of real catfish, and how they sometimes target naïve and vulnerable individuals. They gain trust, just like we saw in The Circle. However, unlike on the Netflix show, we can’t perform background checks and filter out the predators in real life. It's an ongoing issue that parents continue to face with their children. As a whole, Netflix's The Circle is entertaining, and has shown that true friendships can be formed anywhere, even online. But it also brings our attention to how easy it is to take the form of someone else, and infiltrate someone’s circle. This show is a lesson to use social media in the way it's intended. Make connections, but also be vigilant in our online endeavors. Lastly, it teaches that being our true selves on social media is a lot more effective and satisfying than pretending to be someone we're not.KEEP READING: These Celebrities Have a ‘Weird’ Approach to Social Media – And It Might Save Your Life

"We need positive stuff to come from the tragedy that happened," Joe said. "We can't let her name be taken in vain."Looming over the conference was one question: Where was Brian Laundrie? Gabby's fiancé, and a person of interest in her disappearance, hadn't been seen in more than two weeks.Who Strangled Gabby Petito?Brian Laundrie (Photo: Instagram)We may never know for absolute certainty who was responsible for Gabby Petito's demise. That's because the most likely suspect, Brian Laundrie, couldn't offer a sworn confession or stand trial. But given the circumstances that led up to Gabby's death, and everything that happened subsequently, it's almost certain she was killed by her own fiancé. Brian even left a written confession in a notebook found near his body.Brian Laundrie’s DisappearanceAs noted, Brian disappeared from his parents’ home on Sept. 13, 2021, never to be seen alive again. What Brian Laundrie Wrote in His NotebookIn early January, 2022, authorities revealed they had found a notebook near Brian's body that included an admission of Gabby’s killing. The writing seemed disingenuous, and intended to excuse his actions. Brian wrote, in part, “I ended her life … I thought it was merciful, that it is what she wanted, but I see now all the mistakes I made. I panicked, I was in shock."He claimed a "freezing cold" Gabby had a "bump on her forehead," and was "begging for an end to her pain." It was established by Gabby Petito's family in October 2021 to support the search for missing persons, and to provide aid to groups that assist victims of domestic violence. Why the Gabby Petito Case Drew So Much AttentionBecause of Gabby Petito's formidable social media presence, her disappearance was a magnet for citizen crime solvers, who could follow the case, almost real time. That's a large part of why there was so much public interest. It was relatively easy to assemble facts of the case, and to establish a probable timeline, based on Gabby's online posts from the road. She seemed a much more real, and accessible, person than many other crime victims, who are often viewed only through family photos or snippets of video.KEEP READING: Who Is Ted Bundy's Daughter, Rose - and What Is Her Strange (But True) Story?

Is Love Truly Blind? What the Netflix Show Taught Us About Love & Marriage

Netflix’s Love Is Blind is a social experiment to determine whether couples can fall in love and get engaged without ever seeing each other. The first two seasons of the dating reality series have been marked by heartbreak, drama, and the love we all hope to find. However, there’s an underlying message that elevates the show above mere entertainment.RELATED: Netflix’s Devil in Ohio Is Inspired by a True Story – But Which One?Let’s take a deeper look at what Love Is Blind teaches us about love and marriage. Which couples stayed together, and which marriages fell apart? Lastly, let’s answer the question on everyone’s mind: Is love truly blind?Love Is Blind Married Couples: Where Are They Now?Love is Blind came out in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. It had instant success, capturing its audience with the insane concept of getting engaged to someone you’ve never physically seen. The social experiment was centered around making connections emotionally. Did this work?In Season 1, Lauren Speed and Cameron Hamilton made it through their wedding day. A fan favorite from the start, they found love in each other quicker than anyone else. Amber Pike and Matt Barnett were the other couple who made it to “I do." Barnett arguably had the most drama of them all. But, in the end, he found his person without seeing her. Both of these couples are still together, and are on the brink of celebrating their four-year anniversaries.RELATED: Netflix at 25: How Streaming Changed the Way We Have Sex, Fall in Love & Live Our LivesIyanna McNeely and Jarrette Jones tied the knot in Season 2, but their ride was anything but easy. In the newly released episodes After the Altar, we got insight into what issues were pulling the couple apart. McNeely described her frustration with Jones’ attitude that didn’t reflect a married man. She detailed an instance when he went out with friends, and didn't return until 7 a.m. the next day. That led to her moving out. However, before the end of Episode 3, McNeely was moving back in to give the relationship another chance. While the two exhibited great communication skills and love, that wasn’t enough to prevent the impending divorce. In an interview on the We are the Brand podcast, Jones said he felt McNeely didn’t give him enough time to adjust to married life. “I need somebody that’s going to be honest with me. And I Also need somebody that’s going to grow and compromise,” he said, “And somebody that’s going to be patient… Change takes time. I have to train myself, I have to train my mind.”Nick Thompson and Danielle Ruhl were the other couple who left the show married. They displayed nothing but compatibility from the start through to the newest After the Altar episodes. They experienced their share of hardships, mostly centered around Ruhl's anxiety, and learning how to communicate effectively. However, they worked as a unit, for the most part. We didn’t get many details from After the Altar, in terms of what led to their split. But it has been confirmed they filed for divorce in August 2022. Ruhl changed her name back from Thompson on Instagram. That said, the two still have their photos on their pages from as early as July. What the Reality Show Teaches Us About Love and MarriageLove Is Blind does a great job at portraying the awkwardness of the first times. The first move-in, the first time meeting friends, the first night alone, and even the first time they got to see each other. We see all of these firsts with the couples that made it out of the pods. But there’s more that goes into a relationship than just love.RELATED: You Might Turn into Netflix’s Most Toxic ‘Never Have I Ever’ Character – Unless You Make One Big ChangeOne of the biggest lessons that we’ve seen in Love Is Blind is that being different can work sometimes, but if it comes down to core values it usually ends in a deal breaker. For example, in season two Shaina Hurley and Kyle Abrams didn’t work mostly because of their completely opposite religious views. In the end, the two couple could not envision their lives with such polar values and desires. We also saw this theme in McNeely and Jones. Jones was an extroverted, outgoing party seeker. McNeely was more introverted and enjoyed staying in. While this seems superficial, it affected their everyday lives and caused them to drift apart. Once again, we can see core desires and values being a divide. Another discovery made through watching Love Is Blind is that, attraction is important, but there’s more required for a connection. Speed and Hamilton said the three magic words in the first 35 minutes of Episode 1. Even with the editing, the pace at which their relationship progressed was … fast. After seeing each other, their established emotional attraction grew into a physical one. While Speed had never been with someone outside of her own race, Hamilton had previous experience in a mixed-race relationship. Speed may not have chosen Hamilton outside of this experiment due to that, but she fell in love with who he was. The two are still together today. On the contrary, we saw couples like Jessica Batten and Mark Cuevas, who seemed to be connected in the pods and then fell short when they were connected in person. Batten’s lack of attraction toward Cuevas placed a barrier between them that began the demise of their relationship.Did Netflix Prove That Love Truly Is Blind? The question we still have after two seasons is the same that we had with the 2020 premiere. We’ve seen couples from the show make it in the real world. However, we've also had couples call it quits after less than a year. So, how can we really determine whether love is truly blind?RELATED: Netflix’s 5 Most Uplifting and Inspirational Movies to Watch Right NowLike most things in life, the answer isn’t black or white, but instead sits in a weird gray area. In certain cases, as with Barnett and Pike or Speed and Hamilton, love was blind. Not in the sense that attraction wasn’t there, but that each couple's emotional connection was enough to sustain them. And the physical attraction pushed their relationship beyond what it is. However, in a lot of cases, love was not blind. The connection they made in the pods couldn't last past the confines of the show. So, while we can confidently say that love can be blind, we leave the interpretation of these couples and their experience to you.Netflix's Love Is Blind returns for Season 3 on Oct. 19.KEEP READING: Netflix’s ‘How to Change Your Mind’ Says Drugs Are the Answer – Are They Right?
