The Great Takedown of Nickelodeon’s Dan Schneider - How Even Small Voices Have the Power for Impact

What do Amanda Bynes, Ariana Grande, Jaime Lynn Spears, Victoria Justice, and Miranda Cosgrove all have in common? They were all young girls hand-picked by Dan Schneider to become the face of his TV creations. Now, over 30 years later, a series of chilling truths have come to light with HBO MAX's new hit documentary, Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The 2024 four-part documentary television series details the toxic behind-the-scenes world of children’s television from the late 1990s to the early 2010s. Most of which was during Dan Schneider's tenure as a producer on Nickelodeon. In his heart-wrenching interview, Drake Bell drops a bombshell. The former Nickelodeon child star bravely disclosed the horrific sexual abuse he faced as a young boy during his time on Drake and Josh. His confession is on the heels of fellow Nickelodeon child star Jeanette McCurdy's takedown of the toxic on-set culture she faced as a child star. McCurdy was the first of Schneider's "projects" to speak out about the abuse she faced at Schneider's hands. They Offered McCurdy $300,000 To Stay Quiet—Why She Chose To Speak Up InsteadIn her tell-all New York Times Bestseller I'm Glad My Mom Died, Nickelodeon child star, Jeanette McCurdy writes about the executive who would massage her at work, photograph her in bikinis, and pressure her to drink while underage. She refers only to the looming presence as "The Creator." McCurdy never mentions Schneider by name but she doesn't have to. Over two decades at Nickelodeon producing hit teen tv shows from Drake and Josh (2004-2007) to iCarly (2007-2012), Schneider was dropped in 2018 when allegations of inappropriate behavior (uncomfortably close to sexual misconduct) were made by female Nickelodeon writers, namely Jenny Kilgen. In the same breath they offered $300,000.00 to Jeanette McCurdy to keep quiet about her experience growing up under Schenider's thumb."What the f--k? Nickelodeon is offering me three hundred thousand dollars in hush money to not talk publicly about my experience on the show?" she wrote in her memoir. "My personal experience of 'The Creator's' abuse?' This is a network with shows made for children. Shouldn't they have some sort of moral compass? Shouldn't they at least try to report to some sort of ethical standard?"- Jeanette McCurdy,"I'm Glad My Mom Died"The 180 made some wonder, just how blind the children's TV network really was to the inappropriate behavior of their top producer. Nickelodeon kept quiet after McCurdy's I'm Glad My Mom Died hit the shelves. It seems they were waiting for the backlash to die down—then HBO Max dropped their investigative documentary March, 2024.The latest crime to whip a media storm after the release of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, concerns Drake and Josh star Drake Bell.Drake and Josh Star, Drake Bell Claims Sexual Abuse Drake Bell was one of the few male child actors Schneider took a shine to—and nearly 20 years later, it's been revealed the 35-year-old Bell is far from the lucky child star he appeared to be."The abuse was extensive and it got pretty brutal"Drake Bell, Quiet on SetIn a heart-wrenching interview, Bell opens up for the first time ever at the alleged sexual abuse he faced as a young boy at the hands of dialogue coach Brien Peck (no relation to his co-star Josh Peck). Bell claims Peck began grooming him at around 15 years old. Peck's gradual integration into Bell's life caused a rift between the young actor and his father, despite earlier concerns raised by Bell's father about Peck. Eventually, Bell cut ties with his father as his manager. In 2001, when Bell was 15, he allegedly woke up to find Peck abusing him. Despite promises from Peck that it wouldn't happen again, the abuse worsened over time. Fearful of speaking out due to Peck's influential connections in the industry, Bell remained silent until 2003, when he confided in his mother after outside observation of his distress. This led to an investigation during which Bell recorded Peck's confession to the abuse.Following a call to the police, an investigation commenced during which Bell disclosed he had recorded Peck's confession on tape. Nonetheless, Bell was surprised to find Peck's side "entire side of the courtroom was full" of supporters when he was sentenced in 2004 for lewd acts with a minor stemming from Bell's accusations.Kate Taylor is the investigative journalist who called for the court to unseal the letters of support Peck received. Shockingly Peck's powerful industry connections had earned him over 40 letters—many of which included "victim blaming"—written by beloved celebrities like James Marsden and Alan Thicke. All of these horrors occurred under the watchful eye of Dan Schneider—who was famous for knowing every single thing that moved on set—down to the very last detail. So, Who Is Dan Schneider Really?@danwarp/InstagramWell, it depends who you ask. If you ask Nickelodeon, he was their Michael Jordan. Their top creative executive who amassed his $40 Million fortune creating hit TV show after hit TV show. From Zoey 101 to iCarly, Dan Schneider could not miss. In fact he is the recipient of their inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award. But if you asked former Zoey 101 child star, Alexa Nikolas, he was the creepy adult man who sat outside her change room during her costume fittings, when she was 12 years old. “Whenever I had wardrobe fittings, [Schneider] always had to be in them. Thank God there was a curtain, but he was literally [sitting] on [a] chair right outside of the curtain. [It was] to the point where he would sit in the chair, and I would come out and do a little spin. [He] would look at the wardrobe artist and say, ‘Can I have the Polaroids?'”- Alexa Nikolas, Real PodBefore Nickelodeon He Suspiciously Dropped Out of Harvard To Repair ComputersIt's been repeatedly reported the Dan Schneider, 58 exhibited an unhealthy obsession with the entertainment industry from an early age. Even though Schneider was accepted to the prestigious Harvard University, he dropped out after just one semester to repair computers back in Memphis. The Drake and Josh creator has never elaborated on the reasoning behind this rather bizarre career choice.Shortly after dropping out, Schneider (who acted in high school plays) became interested in acting after seeing an advertisement for on set extra work. After landing his first role in a movie, he moved to Los Angeles. He went on to appear in a variety of television shows and films throughout the 1980s and 1990s. But Schneider's significant transition from actor to "creator" began when he joined Nickelodeon as a staff writer. He quickly rose in the ranks and became one of Nickelodeon's television producer's in the late 1990s, after meeting then-Nickelodeon President, Albie Hecht at The Kids Choice Awards (1988).His First Hit Show, "All That"Schneider's first success came with his kid's sketch comedy All That (1999). Schneider wrote the pilot in the style of popular adult sketch comedy Saturday Night Live, but with a kid-friendly twist—–sort of.Over the 10 seasons, the All That casts included Keenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Gabriel Iglesias, Mariah Carey's Ex-Husband Nick Cannon, Jamie Lynn Spears, and most famously, Schenider's first muse—Amanda Bynes. In 1999 Dan Schneider had displayed a fascination with Amanda Bynes. He was so blown away but her natural talent he created Bynes her very own show, aptly titled The Amanda Show. Bynes was just 13.He Was Proud To "Discover" Amanda BynesThe first of its kind for kids, The Amanda Show was set up as a show-within-a-show.At the beginning of each episode Bynes would enter onto a set reminiscent of an old talk show. She would address a studio audience before the episode would launch into a series of independent sketches that included stars like Drake Bell and Josh Peck.Dan Schneider on "The Amanda Show" Schneider's "world building" would become his signature, and spin-offs would become his main vehicle. Schneider's very own NCU (Nickelodeon Cinematic Universe) could not be stopped. His collaboration with the network resulted in a string of remarkable successes, including the iconic shows including: Drake & Josh (2005), Zoey 101 (2006), iCarly (2007), Victorious (2010), Sam & Cat (2013). Under his production company, Schneider's Bakery (named after his grandfather's shop), Schneider solidified his spot as not only Nickelodeon's top executive, but a powerhouse in children's programming. If only it was a simple as that.Controversies Around Dan Schneider's Best Known SeriesDan Schneider and Jamie Lynn SpearsHowever, as Schneider's prominence grew, so did the controversies surrounding his behaviour on set and the treatment of his young actors. Reports of an unhealthy work environment, allegations of verbal abuse, and questionable interactions with underage cast members raised significant concerns. He Told This "Zoey 101" To Change In Front Of HimZoey 101 is a popular teen sitcom that aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. The show follows the life of Zoey Brooks (Jamie Lynn Spears), a teenage girl who enrolls in the previously all-boys Pacific Coast Academy and navigates the challenges of school, friendships, budding romances, and how to give a men's urinal a makeover.Finding out PCA was not a real school, and was actually just a compilation of exterior shots of Pepperdine University, was a character building moment in every 90s childhood. But it turns out, PCA tween dream was not all it was cracked up to be.Following the release of Jeanette McCurdy's memoir, actress Alexa Nikolas who played Nicole on the first two seasons of Zoey 101 has spoken out about her uncomfortable experiences with Schneider."I did not feel safe around Dan Schneider while working at Nickelodeon. Every time he came on set my body got extremely tense."- Alexa NikolasNikolas joined the cast at only 12 years old. Schneider's boundary-busting behaviour (like sitting-in on Nikolas' wardrobe fittings) was instead spun as Schneider protecting his creative choice a-la "high standards."For Nikolas those high standards were "traumatizing". In an interview with Insider, Nikolas recounts the hyper-sexualized energy on the children's television show.*trigger warning*Nikolas recalls a scene that made her deeply uncomfortable at 13-years old. In an unnamed episode, Jamie Lynn Spears had a syringe of goo squirted onto her face, that ends up drips down her in a suggestive way. According to Nikolas, Schneider found this shot amusing. The pornographic nature of this shot was apparent enough, that a male teenage cast mate was able to make the link, saying out loud "it's like a c*m shot."* Schneider defended himself by saying the substance was green, similar to Nickelodeon's well-known slime, and stated that the episode aired without any concerns raised by viewers.Nikolas was later written off the show for her behind-the-scenes feuding with Spears. She recalls Schneider pulling her into a meeting with other executives and yelling at her until she ran out and cried. Alexa Nikolas claims she felt bullied by Spears. The power imbalance was stark. Not only was Spears in a more senior position on the show (being the title character and having starred on The Amanda Show prior) but she is also pop-icon Britney Spears' younger sister. In an interview, Nikolas recalls that at 12 years old, she did not see these power imbalances as she does now. When she brought, what she perceived to be her unfair treatment, to the attention of Schneider and Nickelodeon higher ups, she was reminded "this is not Nicole 101." In 2022, Nikolas founded her initiative Eat The Predators, an activism group for minors in the entertainment industry. As a result, Nikolas was not invited to join the cast of the movie reboot: Zoey 102, streaming July 27th, 2023 on Paramount +.Nikolas was was released from her contract going into Season 3, and her character was replaced with Victoria Justice, who would, in true Schneider fashion, go on to have her own show (a version of a spin-off) Victorious.Encouraging Teen Drinking On "Victorious" Was Just The Tip of The IcebergIn 2010, Nickelodeon levelled up with its more mature show Victorious. Victorious is perhaps most notable for giving two-time Grammy winner Ariana Grande her breakout role as Cat Valentine. And while the Thank U, Next singer has stayed silent about her relationship with Schneider, Nickelodeon has come under fire for "sexualizing" and "infantalizing" young Grande in a compilation of resurfaced clips that speak for themselves. Clips include Grande pouring water on herself upside down, putting her foot in her mouth, and sticking her fingers down her throat. But Grande wasn't the only young actress they targeted in scripted scenes with pornographic undertones. Daniella Monet, who played Victoria's older sister Trina, recalled a time when she expressed concern to the network about a particular Victorious scene–in which she ate a pickle while applying lip gloss.Monet shared with executives that it felt too sexualized to air, but Nickelodeon dismissed her concerns and aired the episode anyway. While most of the Victorious cast has remained tight-lipped over the allegations of misconduct, some chose to speak out. Jennette McCurdy, who played Sam Puckett on iCarly, did not–despite being offered $300,000 to stay silent."iCarly" Is His Most Successful Show To Date—The Dark Reality of His Pride and JoyEverything we know about Schnedier's sinster behavior on the set of iCarly we initially know from Jeanette McCurdy 2022 memoir.I'm Glad My Mom Died is a moving account of McCurdy's experience growing up in a series of extremely controlling environments: being passed from her co-dependent mother to an even-more controlling Schneider. In her memoir, McCurdy's recounts the textbook pattern of abuse and gaslighting she faced at the hands of Schneider. As is the harrowing experience of most child actors, at 14, McCurdy was her family's breadwinner and exploited on either side of her paycheck. In her memoir, McCurdy looks back at the spectrum of Schneider's behaviour. She recounts moments when Schneider would massage her at work, photograph her in a bikini, and pressure her to drink alcohol when she was underage. At the same time, Schneider was hanging the prospect of McCurdy's very own spin-off show over her head. “The Creator is doing the thing that I’ve heard from my co-stars he does with every new star of a show that he’s making—he takes you under his wing. You’re his favorite...”- Jennette McCurdy, I'm Glad My Mom Died McCurdy also claimed, in the vein of clinically diagnosed narcissists everywhere, Schneider would often pit the stars of his two hit shows (iCarly and Victorious) against each other, in order to get them to do what he wanted them to do."The Victorious kids get drunk together all the time. The iCarly kids are so wholesome. We need to give you guys a little edge."- Dan Schneider to Jennette McCurdy, "I'm Glad My Mom Died"While none of McCurdy's co-stars have confirmed (or denied) her claims, they may not be at liberty to. Similar to Disney–Nickelodeon is known for making their young, naive talent sign binding NDAs. However, McCurdy's been indirectly supported by a number of Nickelodeon executives and female writers who have spoken up on Schneider's overt sexism and all around creepy behaviour.Dan Schneider Loves Feet—But Hates Women (Writers)Schneider's outright distaste for female writers is well known in the industry. Kayla Alpert a female writer on All That, relayed that on her first day, Schneider told her that women were not funny and dared her to name a single funny woman.Schneider's reps have since spoken out to say Schneider, "really likes Tina Fey." An unnamed Nickelodeon staff writer backed Alpert's claim stating Schneider once "openly stated he didn't like having female writers in the writer's room." In fact, deep diving into The Schneider's Bakery archives we see after The Amanda Show, Schneider rarely hired female writers at all. In fact his show Drake and Josh, and Zoey 101 credit a remarkable *zero* female writers. While the more progressive iCarly, Victorious, and Sam & Cat do not credit more than two women in the writers' room in the entirety of their runs.In a harrowing chain of events, writer Jenny Kilgen disclosed Schneider would force her to massage his shoulders and preform embarrassing tasks for money. Schneider allegedly pressured the writer into simulating "being sodomized" while she was telling a story about high school–because. When these claims resurfaced Nickelodeon decided it was probably time to cut the chord.Where is Dan Schneider Today? In an exclusive interview with and paraphrased by the New York Times, "[Schneider] declined to comment on the investigation. But he defended his leadership style, denied he left on bad terms, and described his departure as a natural confluence of events after an 'exhausting' period in which he delivered as many as 50 episodes of shows each year. While the jury's out on whether or not anyone's buying this, and whether or not Schneider (who's been virtually silent since the allegations dropped) will ever work again–the overall consensus is: wherever Dan Schneider is now, is a place I don't want to be.Update: Since the release of "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV" Dan Schneider Has Broken His SilenceIn an online statement, the former Nickelodeon producer acknowledged numerous reports of inappropriate behavior shared by actors and others featured in the recent docuseries, Quiet on Set.In his video apology, Schneider urges Nickelodeon to remove questionable content from previous shows. The Lesson LearnedWhile it's easy to dismiss Schneider's influence because of his show's young target audience, in stark reality, Schneider was the head of a children's network that had a net worth of over $20 billion dollars. That's a lot of power. Under his jurisdiction, Nickelodeon became the most valuable children's cable TV network in the world. Schneider managed to make his way from actor to writer to producer to show runner over the years with little to stand in his way, and all with that big, Harvard, brain of his.It took brave and confident women, actors and writers alike, who refused to take part in his games, refused to sit quietly when they knew something was wrong, and to speak out against the man who held their pay checks in his hand. It takes strength and bravado to take on an industry Goliath. Through the strength of these women, one was taken down. Even small voices have the power to make a large impact.More From Goalcast:Why iCarly’s Jennette McCurdy Refused $300K in Hush Money to Write a Book Called ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’Bella Thorne Now: A Close Look at What Happened to the Former Disney StarWhere Are They Now: The Private Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

High School Students Try to Bring Kevin Bacon for Final Prom - The Footloose Star Has an Unexpected Response

It's been 40 years since Kevin Bacon "kicked off his Sunday shoes" and became an instant pop culture icon thanks to his role in Footloose.Although the movie was set in the fictitious town of Bomont, the high school featured in the film was real. Now, it's the end of an era for "Bomont High" (aka Payson High School). The school in Payson, Utah is being relocated at the end of the year. And to mark the occasion, the students campaigned to bring home the bacon — Kevin Bacon, that is — for one last iconic prom...it worked. The #BacontoPayson Social Media CampaignFor months, students of Payson High have been "workin' hard" to convince Kevin Bacon to come to prom. They've pulled out all the stops, re-creating scenes from the movie and posting them on social media, learning the iconic Footloose dance, staging the Footloose Musical, and even planning an event on prom day to benefit Bacon’s SixDegrees.org foundation."The whole entire school year has just [revolved] around Footloose," Grade 10 student Lauren Krout said.Their efforts paid off in a big way.Kevin Bacon Will Be Attending Prom DayOn Friday, Bacon, with the help of the Today Show, appeared via video chat to a gym full of surprised students and faculty. "I'm gonna come. I gotta come ... Let's dance," he told the wildly cheering crowd."I've been so impressed with everything that's been going on there with this crazy idea to get me to come back," Bacon told the students during the assembly. "The movie and Payson High School was a big part of my life, and I've been amazed at the work that all of you have been putting into this with the musical and the flashmobs and the re-creations. It hasn't gone unnoticed by me." He went on to say that he's inspired by the kids' initiative to give back to their community and their willingness to support his charity, SixDegrees.org, which "centers on youth empowerment, justice and equality, and improving a sustainable living environment," according to its website. The organization is currently in the midst of its own Footloose campaign - honoring the 40th anniversary of the movie by creating and distributing 40,000 essential resource kits to communities across the U.S.While the Today Show later clarified that Bacon will be at the school during prom day for the SixDegrees event and not kicking up his heels at the actual dance, rest assured he still has those famous moves.Footloose Legacy Lives OnBacon's portrayal of Ren McCormack, the cool city boy who challenges the conservative norms of his new hometown, struck a chord with audiences in the '80s and continues to do so today. His electrifying performance during the film's iconic dance sequences, set to the catchy tunes of Kenny Loggins' Footloose and other memorable tracks, became etched in cinematic history. Thanks to Footloose, Kevin Bacon's name was as synonymous with the 80S as Trapper-Keepers and jelly sandals. And unlike a lot of teen heartthrobs, his career didn’t stall out there. He's been the leading man in numerous movies and television shows, winning a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award. On top of that, he's a musician, dancer, philanthropist, podcaster, and a beloved social media content creator with a combined following of over 14 million followers. And also? Just a really nice guy.For the students of Payson High, Bacon's appearance on prom day is a dream come true. For them, Footloose isn't just a classic pop culture icon; it's a part of their school's identity. And while their school may be gone this time next year, its legacy will not be forgotten. Christian Bale Learns Something Shocking Following His Daughters Birth - This Inspires Him to Take Action

We often hear about actors’ high salaries and lavish lifestyles or follow them on social media as they hock brands and products they love. But celebrities can also give back in meaningful ways, using their money and platforms to inspire real change. That’s exactly what Batman, a.k.a. Christian Bale, decided to do with his privilege after he learned about the number of foster children living in California.A Big DreamFollowing the birth of his daughter Luka in 2005, Bale began to think about how her life would be affected if he and his wife, Sibi, weren’t around. It led him to learn more about the foster care system in California, and he was shocked to learn that the state has the largest number of foster kids in the country. Not only that, but Bale discovered that many siblings who go into the foster care system are forced to separate and are unable to grow up together. He and Sibi knew they wanted to create some good and inspire change, and learning about these circumstances inspired the couple.Bale decided to create a village where foster siblings could stay and grow up together.“Imagine the absolute pain and the trauma of losing your parents or being torn from your parents, and then losing your brothers and sisters on top of that. That’s no way to treat kids — and so, we will be the hub for that,” Bale told The Hollywood Reporter.A Plan in ActionBale decided to create this village 16 years ago, but crews finally broke ground on the location earlier this year. To get this far, Bale teamed with the non-profit Together California and found a location near McAdam Park in Palmdale, LA.“I had the very unrealistic idea that within one year I’d have created a miniature Sound of Music with kids singing on hills in an endlessly joyful environment,” Bale explained.“But I discovered no, it takes an awful long time and really well-motivated people. It’s complicated and tough to help kids,” he continued. “It should be a hell of a lot easier than it was, but I didn’t flinch for one second.”“I would have done it all if it was just me by myself here,” Bale added to The Associated Press. “It's way more complex. These are people's lives. And we need to be able to have them land on their feet when they age out. There's so much involved in this.”Once complete, the village will consist of 12 three-bedroom townhomes, each capable of housing six children. A full-time professionally trained foster parent will live in each one to offer care and support. There will also be a 7,000-square-foot community center for programs and services and studio apartments for family visits. The apartments will also serve as transitional housing for children who are aging out of foster care.“I hope that this village will be the first of many, and I hope that people, Californians and Angelenos, know to come join us in opening our eyes to what’s happening right under our noses,” Bale added to The Hollywood Reporter. “These are our children, and we must help our children.”Doing Our PartIt’s inspiring to hear about actors, sports stars, and other celebrities giving back, especially since they tend to have more money and followers who can make a big difference. However, their actions also remind us that anyone can — and should — give back when they can.Giving back doesn’t have to look like building a village for foster children. It can be volunteering at a center or with a cause that matters to you. Or, it can be even smaller acts, like donating extra food, making drop-offs at a local charity, or participating in a fundraiser.Or, if you are in a position to do more, consider fostering a child or getting involved. There are more than 400,000 children in the U.S. foster care system who are in need of a loving parent, and plenty of organizations, like Foster America, that are committed to making a difference through education and volunteerism. No matter how you help out, giving back to the community enriches your life and allows you to connect with others in deep and meaningful ways.More from Goalcast:10-Year-Old Nobody Wanted to Adopt Is Sent to Live With Foster Family – This Would Completely Change Both Their Lives11-Year-Old Foster Girl Sent to Principal’s Office for Fighting – Little Did She Know What Was Going to Happen NextChristian Bale: Get More Satisfaction Out Of Your Work

Even Emma Stone is no exception! No matter how successful she may be, like so many others, she'd dreamed of this moment since she was a little girl. But she had a nightmare too—and it seemed like both were coming true.Emma Stone's Life Long Struggle With AnxietySeth Poppel/Yearbook LibraryAs shocking as it may seem, Emma Stone's been acting for nearly 2 decades! After her hilarious performance in the beloved coming-of-age flick Easy A, Stone quickly became a household name. You'd think being in the industry all those years, Stone would be more than comfortable basking in the limelight. But this couldn't be further from the truth.Stone has openly spoken about her anxiety mental disorder and she hopes in doing so, it'll allow others who struggle with anxiety to feel less alone."I started in therapy, I think around age 8, because it was getting really hard for me to leave the house to go to school," she says. "I sort of lived in fear of these panic attacks."Emma StoneFor someone as famous as Stone, admitting she struggles with anxiety can be terrifying. No matter how good our intentions are—our truth is vulnerable! Even though society's come a long way, we still have a ways to go. There's still a stigma around mental health issues—but Stone is dead set on not giving in.In fact, she's not giving up.How Her Weakness Became Her "Superpower"Despite her battle with anxiety, "The Amazing Spiderman" actress accepted the challenge. At only 15 years old, she convinced her parents to move from Arizona to Los Angeles so she could start an acting career. For Stone, she found the silver lining in all her fears. Instead of letting them hold her back—she used them to push her forward. When she got on stage, Stone was forced to focus on the present. She channeled her anxious emotions into something more constructive—more powerful. These jittery emotions became her secret weapon. Her greatest strength. And it paid off... Twice. No One Thought Stone Would Win—When They Called Her Name, She Looked Like She Was Going To Be SickDespite Stone's envelope-pushing performance as the incorrigible Bella Baxter—Lily Gladstone was projected to take home the award for her killer performance in "Killer's of the Flower Moon". The odds were even less in Stone's favour as she snagged her first Oscar in 2017 for her performance in La La Land.No one thought she would win a second Academy Award—including Stone herself! Then Michelle Yeoh, announced her name and the reaction cam said it all. Stone looked almost dazed—even confused! In fact, she looked like she was going to throw up. For a moment she just sat in her seat, while everyone around her gave a standing ovation. No matter how good of an actress Stone is—it's clear this was one time she wasn't faking it. As the saying goes, "just being nominated is an honour" and it's pretty clear Stone was in this frame of mind—and the turn of events was shocking to say the least. But for someone who struggles with anxiety? In a split second when everything changes?Fear kicks in. And it can be paralyzing.Good News/Winning Can Be Just As Startling As Bad News/Losing Even though the unexpected win was nothing but good news—for someone with a history of anxiety disorder like Stone—the shocking turn of events couldn't have made her stomach turn more. For people who struggle with anxiety, the overwhelming feelings can hit anytime, anywhere. In fact, one of the biggest triggers of a panic attack can be when things don't go according to plan. For Stone, winning her second Academy Award just a few years after her first win, seemed to good to be true. She wasn't prepared to take the stage—so when she had to—it hit her like a ton of (gold) bricks. After the shock wore off, Stone was caught on camera breathing deep—likely a technique to calm herself down. Finally got up to accept her award. Then her dress ripped.Talk about things not going according to plan. Her Big Moment Was Almost Overshadowed By A Wardrobe MalfunctionIn a split second, nearly everything went wrong for the suddenly two-time Oscar winner! As Stone made her way toward the stage, she realized the back of her dress had ripped and in her speech she alluded to this being one of her biggest "nightmares".Upon taking the stage, Stone was flush with embarrassment. She mouthed to a fellow actress on stage, "my dress, my dress".Her eyes pleaded for someone to throw her a life line. "King Kong" actress, Jessica Lange tried her best to jump in but it was all moving too fast. Michelle Yeoh who didn't catch the wardrobe malfunction—quickly handed Stone her golden statue, and Stone was forced to take the microphone and make her acceptance speech.Instead of ignoring the elephant in the room, Stone got candid about how embarrassed she was."Oh boy. My dress is broken!", Stone word-vomitted, before turning her back to the audience and gesturing at her busted zipper.Instead of Dying On The Inside—She Laughed It Off On The OutPATRICK T. FALLON/AFP via Getty ImagesEven though the moment couldn't have felt more embarrassing for Stone, she attacked the problem head on—and the greatest thing happened. She got a laugh from the crowd. A sign of encouragement—letting her know it was OK.We've all been there. Accidents happen! And thankfully, Stone chose to get candid about how anxious she felt, and she got just the support she needed—literally. It's hard to be real when you're feeling overwhelmed, but had Stone kept her fears bottled up she may never would have known that sometimes when we think everyone's judging us...they're not.In fact, their really happy to lend us a hand—and a sewing kit?The best part was, this embarrassing wardrobe malfunction couldn't have had a more positive effect. The live, widely televised moment, made people who struggle with anxiety feel totally seen. She Didn't Have A Speech Prepared—So She Took A Deep Breath And Spoke From The Heart During her speech Emma Stone spoke about how her "Poor Things" Director, gave her an amazing piece of advice, when it came to channeling her fears into greatness."The other night I was panicking as you can kind of see—it happens a lot—that maybe something like this could happen. And Yorgos [Lanthimos, Poor Things’ director] said to me, 'Please take yourself out of it,' and he was right, because it’s not about me".Emma Stone, The Academy AwardsStone went on to say how making movies is a collaboration. It's a team sport. A film is made up of "something greater than it's sum parts". Her speech was a full circle moment. It was a reminder that even though she was the one who would take the stage—her anxiety didn't need to be front and center. In order to give proper thanks to all the amazing cast and crew who helped her have her "moment", Stone's fears would have to take a back seat. And with a bit of deep breathing to pause and reflect...they did.Thankfully, "Poor Things" director Yorgos Lanthimos was there to remind Stone of this message—and in turn Stone was able to pass it on and share it with the world.Watch Emma Stone's Full Speech:The fact of the matter is, anxiety disorder affects over 30% of the population—but the comforting news is, it doesn't discriminate.Even the rich, beautiful, and famous aren't safe when it comes to mental health problems—but thankfully these celebs who have such a big platform have the opportunity to be a mouthpiece for the rest of us—and pave the way when it comes to shattering the stigmas. But that's not the only silver lining. The Anxiety Loophole Experts Can't Stop Talking AboutThey say depression is a avoiding pain of the past and anxiety is fear of the future. Often these two mental health issues go hand-in-hand, with one illness being more predominant than the other. But thankfully when it comes to anxiety disorder, experts have found a loophole, and it couldn't be a better way to look at the glass "half full".Is It Anxiety Or Excitement? You Have The Power To DecideChristopher Polk/Variety via Getty ImagesAccording to Forbes Magazine there's nothing stopping your from "re-labeling" your anxiety as excitement."The feeling of anxiety is physiologically almost the same as the feeling of excitement." Forbes MagazineForbes expert research concluded, "Both feelings produce an elevated heart rate and a feeling of butterflies in your stomach. Both might make you sweat. Your body is readying itself for action."3 Tips For "Re-Labeling" Your Anxiety1. Take a moment to think about your situationFirst, assess whether anxiety or excitement would serve you better in a given situation. When faced with a threatening scenario, such as someone wielding a gun, it's natural to experience anxiety, and there may be limited control over that response. Conversely, when gearing up for an interview, view it as a chance to create positive outcomes! Consider it an opportunity to showcase your skills and share your knowledge. Embrace the excitement of this prospect. By concentrating on the positive aspects, you often find that anxiety subsides, and your enthusiasm enables you to present yourself as more competent, enthusiastic, and personable.2. Focus On Positive OutcomesShift your focus to positive outcomes. Anxiety often stems from dwelling on potential negatives that rarely materialize. Stay optimistic, concentrating on positive possibilities, to reduce anxiety and enhance excitement. A heightened sense of excitement can improve your performance, increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome. Cultivating this positive feedback loop is beneficial.3. Don't calm downSounds counter-intuitive, but hear us out! Harness your emotional sensations to energize yourself. Rather than fighting anxiety, channel that energy like an emotional martial artist! If possible, engage in activities like exercise, swimming, dancing, or playing sports like golf, basketball, or boxing to make use of this heightened energy.

Ryan Goslings Secret to Success? Its Simple, Sharing the Spotlight With the Girl of His Dreams

Ryan Gosling, 43, and Eva Mendes, 49, may not have made a public appearance together since 2012, but don't let that fool you. The couple who share daughters Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 7, are going stronger than ever—and their secret to a balanced relationship is...Ryan's busy work schedule?Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes Met Over 13 Years Ago Ryan Gosling is best known for his performances in romances like The Notebook and Crazy, Stupid, Love—but little did the actor know his most life changing role would be for his lesser known filmThe Place Beyond the Pines. His performance may not have earned him flashy any awards but what he took home was so much better.During the shooting of the 2012 Crime-Thriller, Ryan worked alongside the woman who would become his partner for life—Eva Mendes.Though Eva insists this isn't your typical Hollywood love story! Most assumed the two met on set of The Place Beyond The Pines, but Eva posted a clip of their on-screen meet cute with this cryptic caption: "Magic is Real. We did not meet on set. The magic started way before but here’s a little magic captured on camera."Still, 2011 was a big year for Gosling and Mendes. They started off the year as co-stars and ended up tying the knot in a secret wedding ceremony! They Kept Their Marriage Under Wraps—Over A Decade Later It Paid OffThe exact date they exchanged "I do's" is unclear the public wasn't even sure if Gosling and Mendes were even married at all. But during a 2022 interview, Eva set the record straight. The Hitch actress spilled she and Ryan had instant chemistry—and a short engagement! While the couple themselves weren't entirely sure if they were legally married—they confirmed the ceremony and sentiment was exactly the same.Other than Eva's sweet instagram tributes to her husband, very little is known about their relationship. Both stars are A-Listers in their own right so the couple prefers to keep their private life private. Something we can all respect.Still, Gosling—who's the more "public figure" of the two—has never shied away from sharing the spotlight with his woman, even if she's not beside him to bask in it.Recently, Ryan attended the Santa Barbara International Film Festival where he received the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film. While accepting an award for his latest film, Gosling took the opportunity to gush about Mendes, calling her his "dream girl." "Most importantly, I got to meet the girl of my dreams, Eva Mendes, and have two dream children."He continued: "I dreamed of making movies and now movies have made my life a dream," before concluding with: "No way I have contributed half as much to cinema as cinema has given to me."She's Eva! He's Just KenHis latest role as Ken in Barbie (2023) may not be his most challenging, but it's definitely been the most pressing...so to speak. For A-List actors, the job isn't done when the lights go down and the set gets packed up. A big part of the job are press circuits, in hopes of marketing the film to audiences...and with Barbie's 150M dollar marketing budget? The real job was off-camera.But even though Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes have a pact to not bring their home life to work (the couple haven't made a public appearance since 2012) Gosling did the next best thing. He found the perfect way to have a piece of Eva with him on the red carpet. In a sweet tribute to his wife, Gosling sported an "E" necklace during the Barbie premiere. The media was quick to connect the dots—and they couldn't get enough!Even though it may seem like a dream come true to exchange jokes with Jimmy Fallon all night—like any job, what's shiny in the beginning can dull overtime. All that traveling can be exhausting, especially if like Ryan, you're the kind of person whose idea of a great night is being at home with your wife and kids instead of at a party. So when Gosling accepted the Kirk Douglas Award at SBFF he was sure to make a toast to his "dream girl" and thank her for giving him his "dream life."Ahead of his award, the Film Festival Executive applauded Gosling as a true talent, commending him for being “both a dramatic and comedic force in front of the camera."But none of that would be possible without Eva.Thanking His Wife, FirstRyan Gosling is one A-Lister the critics and the audiences can't get enough of, but his busy work schedule is only possible because of the woman behind him—and he never forgets it.When Gosling won the Golden Globe Award for his performance in La La Land (2017), he opened his acceptance speech with a witty one-liner: "this isn't the first time I've been mistaken for Ryan Reynolds", he quipped, making the audience laugh. But with only so much time to say his speech, it didn't take long for the Notebook actor to get real."You don't get to be up here without standing on the shoulders of a mountain of people. There's just no time to thank everyone, but I just want to try thank one person properly." Gosling said."While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I've ever had on a film, my lady [Eva] was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer. If she hadn't taken all that on so I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up here other than me today." Ryan Gosling, Golden Globe Acceptance Speech (2017)He ended his speech by looking into the camera sincerely and delivery a sweet closing sentiment."Sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmeralda, I love you. And if I may I'd like to dedicate this [award] to the memory of her brother Juan Carlos Mendez."True to character, his words weren't just romantic...they were powerful too.You Can Watch Ryan's Full Speech Below:Appreciating the Loved Ones We Have and the Life We GotSure, being a celebrity seems great (and it probably is). Still, going away for months at a time to shoot in remote locations for long hours on different time schedules may not be the easiest thing for a relationship. (Yes, the fat paycheck makes it easier). But family man Ryan Gosling reminds us that sometimes the experiences that could tear us apart are the same experiences that can bring us together and make us closer than ever. The more opportunities we have to show up for our loved ones, the truer and stronger our love becomes. Through thick and thing, good and bad, richer or poorer—all these messy human experiences build and strengthen the foundation of our relationships. So, let's all tip our hats to the fantastic Ryan Reynolds (kidding)!

Single Mom Is Sued for Selling Fake Luke Combs Merch and Has to Pay $250K - But He Has a Completely Different Response

According to Esquire, Luke Combs is “the best country singer of his generation." But it turns out that along with his impressive singing chops, he's also a pretty darn nice guy. After his lawyers, unbeknownst to him, sued a single mom suffering from congestive heart failure for a whopping $250K for selling 18 tumblers in his image worth $380 on Amazon, Combs came in like a "hurricane" and saved the day. And if she wasn't his biggest fan before...we're pretty sure she is now. A Judge Orders Single Mom to Pay $250K for $380 Worth of MerchandiseLife isn't easy for Nicol Harness of Pinellas Park, Florida. A single mom with congestive heart failure, she supports her family by selling homemade tumblers and T-shirts on Amazon. After attending a Combs concert in Tampa this past summer, Harness decided to add some Combs-themed drink tumblers to her shop. She sold 18 at $20 a pop. She had no idea that the $380 she earned was going to cost her $250,000 in a copyright infringement lawsuit.Combs' legal team decided to go after Harness, along with others, in federal court in Illinois. They won.Harness told the media that she had no idea she was being sued until she returned from a hospital stay and discovered she wasn't able to access her Amazon funds (all of which were being seized to pay down the settlement). After doing some digging, she found a notice of the lawsuit buried in the junk folder of an AOL email account she rarely uses. By the time she saw it, it was too late. The verdict was already signed, sealed, and delivered. Not knowing what else to do, she turned to a local news station that runs a consumer investigative segment called Better Call Behnken for help."I don't have money to pay my bills," she told reporter Shannon Behnken, sobbing. "I didn't mean any harm to Luke Combs. I quit selling the tumbler. I pulled it down. I just don't understand."Neither did Combs.Luke Combs “Sick to My Stomach” Over LawsuitWhile the legal victory sends a strong message about the importance of intellectual property rights, Combs wasn't here for his lawyers going after Harness. Like the rest of the world, the singer-songwriter heard about the lawsuit on the news. Stunned, he took to social media to address it. In a now-viral Instagram post, he revealed that he woke up to the news and had already spent two hours "trying to make this right." "I was completely and utterly unaware of this," Combs said in the video posted to his page.Combs also noted that: “We do have a company that goes after folks – only, supposedly, large corporations operating internationally that make millions and millions of dollars – making counterfeit T-shirts, things of that nature, running illegal businesses, and apparently this woman, Nicol, has somehow gotten wrapped into that, and that makes me absolutely sick to my stomach.”So sick, that he decided to take matters into his own hands. He revealed that he had already called Harness to apologize and was sending her $11,000 — double the amount of money locked in her Amazon account, "so she doesn't have anything to worry about."And then in a move worthy of the good-guy god himself, Keanu Reeves (bless him), Combs said he was going to sell his own tumblers on his website and donate ALL OF THE PROCEEDS to Harness and her family to pay her medical bills. Commenters Respond to Luke Combs Act of KindnessOf course, it wouldn't be the internet if everyone actually agreed with Comb's response. Some naysayers said that Harness broke the law and shouldn't be "rewarded for stealing."But thankfully, there were also comments like these ones..."To the ppl in the comments saying she doesn’t deserve his help or it’s her fault she stole / copyright..y’all need to find Jesus.. bless Luke Combes and his family.. talk about Christmas blessings ❤️""Master class in PR responses, and it hits so well because it’s not a PR response, it’s his human response. Good for Luke for taking control back. His brand is himself and he stayed true to it. 👏🏻" "This response right here is EXACTLY what we need more of in this world. Getting to know someone’s intent is just categorically missing from human interaction these days. Bravo, Luke!"Bravo indeed!!There's no denying that Combs was well within his legal rights to sue Harness. But he chose compassion instead. And while he may not be $250,000 richer, the kindness and empathy he displayed is priceless. And undoubtedly, just scored him more than one major fan for life. Man Shows Up to a Pub to Play a Gig - Bumps Into a Famous Musician Who Helps Him Buy a Home

Gregor Hunter Coleman received the gift of a lifetime.Pursuing your dreams isn’t always easy, particularly for artists and musicians. Creating and inspiring others may be in your soul, but these types of gigs don’t always pay the bills. That’s why this story of rapper Post Malone helping out a struggling artist has touched so many people: it’s the ultimate story of an artist giving back.A Random MeetingEarlier this year in May, Post Malone was in Glasgow for a show stop on his Twelve Carat tour. He wandered into a pub, where he met a local artist named Gregor Hunter Coleman. The 30-year-old had been performing at the bar that night, and Malone was impressed. He asked if he could buy Coleman a drink. That’s when Malone learned that Coleman had stopped drinking so that he could save his money for a house. Once he had his own kitchen and a fridge, he’d stock it with beer. The artist had enjoyed the performance, and he wanted to do something, though, so he asked if Coleman would consider playing at his concert afterparty.“He started saying, how much will you charge? I said nothing, it's Post Malone, this is the chance of a lifetime,” Coleman later recalled to the BBC.A Sweet OfferColeman didn’t want to take money for the gig, but Malone wasn’t going to have him perform for free, either. So, he offered to pay part of the deposit on the home that Coleman had his eye on.“He offered to help me out with my deposit so I could have more time to focus on music, which I thought was wild,” he told STV. “I’d always heard stories that he was a really nice guy.”The aspiring musician didn’t reveal how much Malone ultimately gave him for his house, but he did say that they exchanged phone numbers. Coleman also posted about the encounter on Instagram.“I never thought whilst heading out the door with my guitar on Friday night for my gig at Wunderbar Glasgow that I’d meet Post Malone and have such a life-changing experience,” he wrote. “The hours spent with this gent chatting and jamming was life-changing in itself, not to mention what followed. This could be my time to hit the ground running.”Following the DreamColeman never expected a musician to show up at his gig that night, and if he did, he certainly didn’t think a well-known figure would like his music and offer him a gig. However, if Coleman hadn’t been pursuing his music while saving for his future, this encounter would have never happened. It’s an important reminder that if you feel like you’re meant to perform or create art, you should find a way to do exactly that. Yes, most of us have bills to pay and responsibilities in life, but carving out time for your passion is also important. Not all celebrities are known to be as nice and generous as Post Malone. But sometimes it’s the breaks we don’t see coming that impact us most of all. So keep one foot in front of the other and carry on. Because in life, you never truly know what might happen next.More from Goalcast:Post Malone Trades Shoes With a Fan at His Concert in Heartwarming Gesture That’s Gone ViralYoung Boy Walks Up to Keanu Reeves and Makes One Simple Request – His Response Makes Headlines5 Incredible Times The Rock Inspired Us to Become the Best Versions of Ourselves

Jane Fonda Gives a 'Direct' and 'Unselfconscious' Lesson in Making Friends After 60 But Its Brilliant Anytime

At 85, Jane Fonda—who celebrated her 85th birthday by announcing her cancer remission—understands firsthand just how crucial friendships are to a sense of health and well-being. After being told by her “favorite” ex-husband, Ted Turner, that making new friends after 60 is just not something you do, she set out to prove everyone wrong—and as with most things in life, the long-renowned actor and activist was successful in her efforts. There are many reasons people say it’s harder to make friends the older you get. From busy lifestyles, to established social circles, divergent life stages, social anxiety, and straight-up fear of rejection, it’s hardly uncommon to feel there are more and more barriers to forging fresh connections as we age.In an interview with CBS, during which Rita Moreno, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin promoted their film, 80 For Brady, Fonda dished on how to meet new people, and how to actively pursue them as friends. Bonus: she even offers a short script one might use to introduce new people into one’s life. Let's dig in, shall we?Jane Fonda On Sustaining And Pursuing Friendships So what’s Jane Fonda's big secret to instigating meaningful friendships, even into an older, golden age? Intention, of course. Direct, unselfconscious intention. Her advice to anyone who’s struggling to truly connect with would-be friends? “You have to be intentional,” she said. “I never used to be intentional. I would meet Sally Field, for example, but not pursue her—well, I did pursue you,” she added, looking at Field. “Oh, goodness sakes, I couldn’t make you stop,” Field joked. Fonda in her defense, responded, "See because she tends to be reclusive."And Fonda’s Grace and Frankie bestie, Tomlin, agreed that she is certainly difficult to ignore. “I don’t really like people that much,” shared Tomlin. “I try to avoid them. But those who are intentional,” she said, pointing at Fonda, “you just can’t get rid of them.” Putting Intentional Friendships Into Practice With Fonda-Style HonestySo, how do you actually put this intentionality into practice and start making new friends? Fonda makes it sound simple, and maybe it is. She says you should seek out the people you most enjoy being around. “You have to pursue people that you want to be friends with,” she said. And for those who still can't imagine just how they’d turn an acquaintance into a friend, she shares a handy script.“…you have to say, ‘I’m intentionally wanting to be your friend,’” she said. “And it works. People hear that and then they stick around, and you develop new friendships.”As far as pre-planned scripts go, this one's a winner because it’s straightforward, honest, and vulnerable—all the qualities of a worthwhile friend, some would say.Jane Fonda On Female FriendshipsLOS ANGELES, CA - SEPTEMBER 17: (L-R) Actors Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda speak onstage during the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on September 17, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)In her recent interview, Fonda shared that her friendships with women in particular are at the crux of her identity.“I don’t even know what I would do without my women friends,” she said. “I mean it’s, ‘I have my friends, therefore I am.’”“Women sit facing each other, eye-to-eye, and they say, ‘I’m in trouble, I need you, can you help me?’ We’re not afraid of being vulnerable,” she added. Unsurprisingly, there are some men who take feel left out of Fonda’s statement. For instance, @McHoward21 tweeted, "This is bogus and untrue for the men in my circle. I think society projects that as how men ‘are’ but I think in many circles this is not accurate." While it’s true that concepts of masculinity and femininity are most definitely undergoing an era of change, when it comes to friendships, Fonda is nonetheless still hailed as an expert of sorts, and with good reason.Field recently told Entertainment Tonight that she and Fonda have been close since the 1980s, adding that their friendship started when Fonda “literally knocked on my door and said, ‘Come on, we’re going to lunch.’” And Fonda and Tomlin have famously been friends for 40+ years, since they co-starred in the 1980 hit 9 to 5. They pair even gave a TED talk on female friendship in 2015. Jane Fonda Is Right: You Can Make New Friends At Any Age When it comes to making new friends, Fonda hits the nail on the head: quality friends raise your sense of belonging, happiness, and self-worth. They also help you cope with stress, among countless other benefits. In spite of the many ways that our preferences and hangups become more defined as we age, the reality is that friendships are indeed central to our physical and mental health—no matter how old we get. As Jane Fonda so eloquently puts it, putting yourself out there, making real connections, and allowing yourself to be vulnerable are all part and parcel of instigating new and lasting friendships. Perhaps they’re also the secret to feeling youthful for longer, something Fonda seems to know a thing or two about. While it is true that overall, making new friends as an adult requires more effort and intentionality than it does in childhood, adolescence, or even young adulthood, it is still 100% possible with determination, open-mindedness, and the will to leave one's comfort zone now and again. You heard it here first: not only are late-blooming friendships possible, but the chances of making deeper, more authentic friendships later in life is arguably more likely as we grow older, wiser, and become more discerning human beings with a stronger sense of self.MORE FROM GOALCAST
