Actress Anne Hathaway is a person just like any of us and like us, she has her fair share of stress and anxiety in her life.
However, she has a pretty different — and totally badass — way of dealing with that stress. In recent interview with Town & Country, she shared her unique method. “Set a timer on your phone, have a candle nearby, and write it all down,” she says while recommending at least 12 minutes to expel all troubles on the page.
OK, that seems reasonable so far. There is something liberating about writing out everything that’s on your mind so you can get it out of your mind and organize it on paper.
Her troubles go up in flames – literally
However, she doesn’t stop at writing as a calming method. In fact, this is when things get interesting. “You spew it all out. You do not read it,” she explains. “The time goes off, you tear it out of the book, and you light it on fire. Literally on fire.” She says “All of this energy, this angst, this rage—everything is smoke.”
Writing down all of your stress points and burning them is supposed to signify said anxieties going up in flames — and subsequently out of your life. Of course, fire is one way of handling stress, especially if it happens to work for you. But she also has found social media as a great outlet for combatting her daily stresses such as clear communication and personal privacy.
“Having the ability to do something on my own terms has been good for me,” she says of using Instagram as a way to fend off paparazzi. “It has allowed me to calm down and communicate in a way that’s more clear.”
When you find what works for you, do it! Whatever it takes, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone (watch out with that fire, Anne…).
