Couple Has Been Divorced for 28 Years - But, Woman Notices Her Dad at Her Mom’s House for This Surprising Reason

Even though they are no longer a couple, Codies parents continue to look out for each other.

Often when a marriage ends in divorce, the adults are still connected, whether it’s through community, friends, or children. For so many couples, it’s important to stay on good terms so they can both be there for their children. However, this is easier said than done.

Codie LaChelle McPhate wrote about divorced adults who remain committed to their families, which she was inspired to post one day when she stopped by her mother’s house and saw something completely unexpected.

“This is my dad, mowing my mom’s lawn. They’ve been divorced 28 years,” Codie wrote.

Codie explained why her father was still helping his ex-wife.

“My mom has bad knees, and my stepdad works out of town,” Codie said. “When my younger siblings questioned, ‘Why is your dad mowing mom’s lawn?,’ I told them, ‘Because, she needed help, and he knew she couldn’t get out here to do it, so he did.’”

Just because the family dynamic isn’t traditional, doesn’t mean it isn’t great. Even though Codie’s parent have been divorced for nearly 30 years, they are bonded by their former love for each other and their current love for their shared family.

“This is co-parenting. This is how lucky I am to have 4 parents who respect each other, and know that at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is showing your children (even ones that are 32 years old) how to treat people, and how to love your family, no matter how it came together,” Codie said.

Codie’s father doesn’t want praise for his actions, he’s just happy to set a good example.

“My dad is with me in Texas on vacation. He doesn’t even live here where my mom lives. So not only did he do something selflessly for her, he did it for her while he was on his VACATION,” Codie wrote. “He wants everyone to know, ‘I’m no saint.’ He just wants to show others that you don’t need to act like an angelic pastor on lent, but that we should all choose kindness whenever we can.”

Thousands of people viewed Codie’s post and resonated with its message. Unsurprisingly, the importance of kind, respectful parents -- even those who are no longer together -- hits home with people worldwide.

“My dad said he didn’t do this for the recognition,” Codie wrote. “He said my mom and he decided when they we going through their divorce they would both choose to be adults and treat each other with respect and compassion, because no matter how their marriage ended, they both loved each other very much at one point, and that, that love -- counts for something. That if they were going to raise their children to be good, kind people, they needed to be good kind people.”

Codie’s dad showed that what mattered wasn’t his current relationship status, but his love for his family. Intent on being the best role model for his children, he continued to go above and beyond for his children’s mother. Now that’s one big happy family.
