Incredible Professor Takes Care of a Student's Baby - While Teaching a Class

A caring Professor Teaches a Lesson in Compassion

Any parent can tell you it is no easy task taking care of a newborn, especially when balancing other big responsibilities. Often, you depend on babysitters to help when your time is needed elsewhere. But what happens when the babysitter is sick and you have no other options?

Mother of three Ramata Sissoko Cisse is an assistant professor of biology at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville. Recently, Dr. Cisse received a late-night call from one of her students. The student explained to her professor that she had no alternative to bringing her baby to class. Dr. Cisse quickly re-assured her that wouldn’t be a problem.

In class the baby boy could not sit still and was causing a distraction to his mom and all of the other students. What happened next is astonishing.

The Professor (and Fellow Mother) Steps In

“Hand me the baby”, she said. Just like that, Dr. Cisse offered to keep the boy comfortable while she continued presenting her lecture. She soon realized she was unable to use her hands so she used a lab coat as a harness to strap the baby boy to her back. She then picked up where she left off and proceeded with the lesson.

A Sleeping Baby Becomes Part of the Lesson

As time went on, the boy wandered into a deep sleep. Dr. Cisse used this moment as a lesson, explaining to her anatomy class that her body heat was a source of comfort for the baby as he is experiencing a new environment for the first time.

With the expert skills of Dr. Cisse as both a mother and a teacher, the students were able to re-gain focus, the baby got to rest, and the professor got a beautiful teaching moment.

As a proud and experienced mother, Dr. Cisse knew what she had to do in that moment. “It’s like a moral responsibility.”, she stated. Her selflessness didn’t go unnoticed.

Praise For The Professor's Compassion

After the photos capturing Dr. Cisse teaching with a baby strapped to her back were posted online, the professor’s daughter shared a message to spread the news. “Her student couldn’t find a babysitter today and being the true African mother that she is, taught a three-hour class with the baby on her back and fed him. I’m so blessed to be raised by a woman who loves the world as much as her own children.” Some of her other students of present and past shared comments praising their favourite professor.

Leading By Example

For Dr. Cisse, she’s all about spreading love in hope her students can learn to do the same. She believes there is no better method than leading by example. “Love and compassion are part of the philosophy of my classroom,” she shared. “I’m hoping they can spread love, take it to other people who need it.”

Her words reveal to us that love perpetuates love and caring for the people around you can go a very long way. We feel the ripple effect of good deeds, and It’s clear why Dr. Cisse is a popular prof at Georgia Gwinnett College.
