Texas-born rapper takes the stand and leads women through a male-dominated industry.

Popular rap has always been a male-dominated industry. Women in the game have been victims of misogyny and inequity for as long as the genre has been around. One female rapper is on trial following an incident that happened in 2020 involving herself and Canadian born rapper, Tory Lanez.

Earlier this week, Megan Thee Stallion took to the stand an emotional testimony regarding an incident that left bullet debris in her feet.

After a party in Los Angeles in 2020 the two rappers who were presumably intimate got into an altercation while heading home. An argument ensued and led to Megan exiting the vehicle that Tory Lanez was driving.

While outside, she was a victim of misogynistic slurs followed by a gunshot that wounded her foot.

An Offer to Be Silent

At the time of the incident, Lanez allegedly offered Megan one million dollars to keep her mouth shut. Understanding that this wasn’t to be forgotten, Megan took to Instagram Live to share with her fans what happened when they left the party.

Fast forward two years and government officials are still trying to get the story straight. Due to the violent and extraordinary nature of the incident, Megan was left in shock shortly after. Fingers have been pointed in every direction regarding who is to blame for pulling the trigger.

Lanez, who could be facing up to 22 years in prison has denied ever shooting Megan. Instead, his lawyer told the Los Angeles court a jealous argument between Megan and her Friend Kelsey Harris was cause for the shooting.

Since the occurrence, many of their rap contemporaries have poked fun at the situation using slut-shaming and misogynistic lyrics. The more widely consumed of the lot is Drake’s 2022 track Circo Loco where he raps: “This b—-h lie ‘bout gettin’ shots, but she still a stallion/She don’t even get the joke, but she still smilin’”. In this lyric Drake is clearly stating that he’s siding with Tory and questioning the truth of Megan’s statements. Based on ties? Bro-code?

Megan Fights Through Unbearable Pain to Make Her Voice Heard for Women Everywhere

During the court hearing this past Tuesday, Megan stated “I wish he would’ve just shot and killed me if I knew I was going to have to go through this torture”. She mentioned that the public backlash since the incident has been unbearable and the amount of male rappers that have sided with Lanez made it extremely difficult for her to continue with her career.

With all that’s going on, it is incredible that Megan continues to persevere and have continued success at the highest level. This past August she released her second studio album ‘Traumazine’, highlighting self-expression, empowerment of African-American women, and overcoming life’s most difficult moments. The first single off the album, “Sweetest Pie” with British Pop-star Dua Lipa, even peaked at #12 on the global Billboard chart.

Megan has proved to be a role model for young black women as well as a trailblazer for all women in a male-dominated industry. It isn’t easy to go against the grain and have hate coming from all different directions. We hope she stays strong through this process and brings women to the top of the rap game!
