Usually when someone asks to speak to the manager, they are about to voice a complaint. The stereotype is often an older woman who is unhappy with the service she is provided and asking for a manager.

In a recent turn of events, an older woman in tears did ask for the manager of an ice cream shop after being served by a teenage boy, but her words about the employee in question were sweeter than the ice cream he served her.

Why One Woman Was Crying at a Drive-Thru

Brenden McGee started working at Whitey’s Ice Cream shop when he was 16 years old. It was his first job, and he was excited to get some experience there. Little did he know, he would be getting a different kind of experience than he was expecting.

One day when he was working at the drive-thru, a woman pulled up who had obviously been crying. She struggled to get the words out, but she eventually ordered a shake. He felt for her and decided to cover her bill and said, "Your shake is on me tonight. You have a good night."

Brenden didn’t think of the incident again after it happened, until a few days later when the woman came back looking for Brenden’s manager, Rhonda.

Rhonda was worried that Brenden had done something wrong and was going to get in trouble with this customer. However, the opposite happened. The woman explained that her husband had recently died, and she was having trouble going out to places that made her think of him. Whitey’s was one of those places.

She had been so touched by Brenden’s kindness in paying for her order that she wanted to repay him in some way. She asked Rhonda if she could give Brenden an employee of the month reward.

Whitey’s doesn’t have an employee of the month program, but Rhonda reassured the customer that she would spread the word about Brenden’s kind actions.

How One Employee’s Actions Proved That What Goes Around Comes Around

Whitey’s administration put a note in Brenden’s file about the act of kindness, and they hung a sign about it in their back room as well. The customer was happy to see her favorite worker recognized, and Brenden was pleased that his actions could serve as an example to others.

"It definitely is better to be kind and polite ... we automatically have to be polite to people, but it's always nice to go that extra mile," he said.

Brenden’s act of kindness went viral just in time -- he was diagnosed with cancer only a few months later. His reputation for doing good preceded him, and a GoFundMe was set up to help cover his medical bills.

People from all of the world donated and soon enough Brenden was in remission! This story just goes to show that no act of kindness goes unrewarded -- what goes around comes around, so be kind and have compassion.
