Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich's Engagement Proves Love Doesn't Have A Timeframe

After years of personal and romantic struggles, Demi Lovato finally found the One in Max Ehrich when she least expected it--during quarantine.

Demi Lovato has been through a lot in recent years, from heartbreak and health struggles to stints in rehab and mental health concerns. Throughout it all, she stayed strong and resilient on her personal journey towards recovery, never giving up.

It turns out happiness was waiting for her around the corner; she just had to get there.

Demi has gone through a lot of relationship ups and downs in her life. Both her relationships with Wilmer Valderrama and Joe Jonas, both ending in heartbreak – very publicly. She also struggled with substance abuse.

At first, Wilmer and Demi's relationship seemed indestructible.

“People told him [Valderrama], ‘You should probably leave. She’s on a spiral, and you’re going to be sucked down with it.’ But he was like, ‘I’m not leaving. This is somebody I really care about,'” Demi told Cosmopolitan in 2015, after opening up about her struggles to get sober and her stays in rehab.

But after six years together, Lovato and Valderrama announced their split with a joint statement shared on Instagram. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends,” the pair wrote at the time.

Yet, the two stayed close despite their split. After Demi suffered a near-fatal overdose in 2018 and went back into rehab, he was still one of her “biggest support systems” and was in “constant communication.” But romance was no longer in the cards for them and they both moved on, Wilmer getting engaged to his girlfriend, Amanda Pacheco on January 1st 2020.

Demi Lovato, never the bitter ex

Demi's lasting relationship with her exes is inspirational to say the least. For example, back to her Camp Rock days, Demi briefly dated Joe Jonas. The relationship did not last long, and it was Joe who decided to terminate it. "Demi and I knew going into our romantic relationship that it may not be an easy one," he told Us Weekly at the time.

I realize over the time we have shared together that I feel I care more about our friendship right now. It was my choice to break up, but I love her as a friend. She's been there for me when I needed her. I will continue to be her friend and be there for her.

Joe Jonas

Did that affect their friendship? Not the least. When Joe Jonas got engaged to Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner, Demi was as excited for them as the rest of the world, commenting "HUGE CONGRATS!!!! So happy for the both of you!!!!"

As she supported all her exes in their newfound happiness, when was Demi's turn going to come?

Love found her when she least expected it

Demi has had a rough time of it in recent years, and even earlier this year shared a story about a conversation with her parents about her sexuality, and the chance her soulmate could be a woman.

"It was actually, like, emotional but really beautiful," Lovato said in January. "After everything was done, I was, like, shaking and crying, and I just felt overwhelmed."

At the time she was still shaping her future.

I don't know what my future looks like," she continued. "I don't know if I'm going to have kids this year or in 10 years. I don't know if I'm going to do it with a partner or without.

She may have lived through hardships, both in life and love, but Demi has finally met her soulmate. She took the whole world by surprise when she announced that she and actor Max Ehrich were engaged!

"When I was a little girl, my birth dad always called me his 'little partner' -- something that might've sounded strange without his southern cowboy like accent. To me it made perfect sense. And today that word makes perfect sense again but today I'm officially going to be someone else's partner," Demi wrote as the caption for a series of photos that showed Lovato and Ehrich embracing on a beach, with her wearing a beautiful engagement ring.

I'm honored to accept your hand in marriage. I love you more than a caption can express but I'm ecstatic to start a family and life with you.

Max manifested his love years ago--before she even knew him

On his own Instagram, Max also posted about the engagement, sharing he couldn't "spend another second of my time here on Earth without the miracle of having you as my wife."

The 29-year-old actor, popular for his role in the soap opera The Young and the Restless, also had a small role in two Disney productions: High School Musical 3: Senior Year and Shake It Up.

Years ago, back in 2011, before he had even met Demi, Max actually tweeted "All I wanted for Christmas was Demi Lovato. #cantalwaysgetwhatyouwant...."

Nine years later, Max and Demi are engaged! How crazy is it?

A romance that bloomed in quarantine

It seemed that Demi's quarantine started off on a rocky path. Earlier in 2020, Demi has opened up about resurfacing body image and mental health struggles during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Despite all these challenges, one major good thing came out of the lockdown for Demi: her relationship reached a new level.

But when you know, you know. And this whirlwind relationship seems to have started rather quickly and gathered steam fast! Max and Demi's romance started in a banal, first by flirting over Twitter--where Max unknowingly manifested their romance, 9 years ago.

Rumors about the couple's romance first started spreading in March 2020, when it was revealed they were social distancing together. Shortly after, they went Instagram official.

Her and the Young and the Restless star had reportedly only been dating for a few weeks, before they decided to take the next step of quarantining together.

Max accepts her, just as she is

"Demi and Max have been seeing each other for a few weeks now," a source told E! in March "They have been quarantining together at Demi's house and it's going really well."

But one major thing that cements their love for each other is how Demi feels completely at ease with her new love. As she said in an Instagram story, Max is "someone who accepts and loves me for who I am; Flaws and all."

"We literally act like hooligans on the daily and don’t give a F— if we’re embarrassing ourselves if others are around!!" she wrote. Considering her past issues with insecurity and body image, Demi seems to have found someone she could truly be herself with.

I spend my days with you, bare faced and in a bathing suit.. I feel unconditionally loved and accepted by you in a way that I've never felt before.. I can't explain it or you.. you’re indescribable, you beautiful, man.

Demi Lovato never gave up on love

Demi never gave up on love. Even after all the heartbreak and the rough patches, she always remained a powerful force of positivity for her fans and for the world. Eventually, that led to finding the right guy for her.

During a 2018 InStyle interview, Demi said she feels confident when looking for a relationship. “I’m normally the first one to make the move," she said. "I’m always the one who says, ‘Let me get your number.’ Or I slide into their DMs on Instagram.”

With Max, she took the leap because she felt like she had found someone with whom she could be herself to the fullest. It’s important to never give up – and always hope for what could possibly be. And it looks like for Demi, it means finally getting her well deserved, happily ever after.
