Cinderella is one of our favorite fairytales and animated Disney movies of all time. Most little girls dream about becoming princesses. One day a handsome prince will come along, save them and they will live together happily ever after. It’s pure and beautiful.

Cinderella is a folk-tale and has thousands of variants known throughout the world, but the main idea underlying the story refers to unjust oppression and triumphant reward. The first literary European version was written by Giambattista Basile, and the most popular by Charles Perrault.

Although Cinderella is often attributed to Disney, they did not invent it. However, the storyline they chose for the movies is more resembling to Perrault’s version. And for good reasons since it appears to be more suitable for children.

I will say that as a child I thought that the original story belonged to Disney until told otherwise. Intrigued and curious, I’ve read the tale written by Brothers Grimm. Now, this is something you don’t want to read to your children before bedtime; it’s more likely a scary tale than a fairy tale.

Here, Cinderella’s father is alive and apparently tolerates the mistreatment of his child and instead of the fairy godmother, there’s a white bird that grants her wishes everytime she prays under the tree that the girl planted over her mother’s grave. While Disney’s shoe fitting scene is actually amusing, in Grimms’ tale one stepsister cuts off her toes and the other one, her heel…

But back to the version we love — We’re all grown up now and tough enough to save ourselves. We know that “prince” is just another word for the one that can help us build our own modern fairytale. But Cinderella is one of the stories that kept us daydreaming throughout our childhood and made us not want to settle down for anything less than happiness. And most importantly, it taught us to never give up on our dreams.
