Leonardo DiCaprio’s Relationship with Younger Women Isn't Funny - It's Deeply Unhealthy

Leonardo DiCaprio has developed a reputation for dating significantly younger women, and as concerning as that already is, it’s his pattern of calling those relationships off that needs some more scrutiny. DiCaprio has never dated a woman over 25 years of age – ever. His most recent break-up with Camile Morrone further solidified this theory as they called it quits only a few short months after her 25th birthday.RELATED: Leonardo DiCaprio Shows Humble Backgrounds Don’t Have To Be A Barrier To SuccessThis triggered a slew of memes about DiCaprio and his relationship history. Let’s talk about the DiCaprio-Morrone breakup and why the situation just simply isn’t funny despite the running jokes online. Finally, let’s take a look at how Hollywood dismisses large age gap relationships and why we’re only realizing now just how bizarre they truly are.Leonardo DiCaprio and Camila Marrone Break Up Spark Viral MemesDiCaprio, 47, and Morrone, 25 finally called off their relationship after more than four years together. This confirmed the decades-long gag of DiCaprio’s relationships having an expiration date. If you weren’t already aware, DiCaprio is famous for his large age-gap relationships as well as for never dating a woman over the age of 25. Is this pattern a fact?Yes, it is. Gisele Bundchen was 23 at the time of their split and Bar Refaeli was 25. At the time that he was dating these women, DiCaprio was in his late 20s to mid-30s. But, he was the only one aging in his relationships. He then was linked with Blake Lively who was then 23, followed by Toni Garrn, 21. Both Kelly Rohrbach and Nina Agdal were his previous two relationships before Morrone and both ended when the women were 25. Now, the latest, is Morrone who (to no surprise) was also 25 when she and DiCaprio decided to part ways.RELATED: How Leonardo DiCaprio’s Comment on Kate Winslet’s Body Changed Her LifeWe can confirm that this is in fact a motif that most have picked up on. The question now becomes, why? How and why DiCaprio seems to steer clear of anyone over the age of 25 is what needs to be analyzed. Hollywood has dismissed large age gaps in the past which normalized them in the context of the industry. But with many celebrities now coming out with their stories of being in a similar situation, it’s come to light that these large age gaps need to be reconsidered and criticized rather than made into a punchline. Let’s look at Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift and how their experiences have shaped our new perspective on age gaps in Hollywood.Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato Speak Out Against Age Gap Relationships in HollywoodIf you haven’t streamed Taylor Swift’s 10-minute rendition of her 2012 hit “All Too Well”, then you should do so. Not solely for the fact that it’s a lyrical masterpiece, but because it divulges some details about her relationship with actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Swift was 21 during their relationship while Gyllenhaal was 30.The song as a whole is heart-wrenching and really demonstrates the fragility of her innocence and inexperience at 21 versus the somewhat manipulative nature of Gyllenhaal at 30. Now 41, Gyllenhaal- like DiCaprio- has a history of dating younger women including his current girlfriend and French model Jeanne Cadieu who is 26. The lyrics that made the most impact are as follows: “And I was never good at telling jokes but the punch line goes / I’ll get older but your lovers stay my age,” along with, “You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine / And that made me want to die.” These words are extremely telling, and paint a picture of an unhealthy relationship between the two.RELATED: Why Taylor Swift’s Secret Relationship With Joe Alwyn Proves She Finally Learned Her LessonSwift isn’t the only one giving a voice to young women who have felt victimized in large age gap relationships. Demi Lovato has also recently released her song “29” which is about her ex-boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama. The two dated from 2010 to 2016. They met when she was 17 years old and he was 29 but supposedly didn’t start an actual relationship until she turned 18. That being said, the age gap wasn’t the only questionable aspect of their relationship but also that she was a freshly turned adult. Some of the lyrics that stood out from Lovato’s “29” include: “Finally 29 / Funny, just like you were at the time / Thought it was a teenage dream / Just a fantasy / But was it yours or was it mine / 17, 29,” as well as, “I see you’re quite the collector / Yea, you’re 12 years her elder / Maybe now it doesn’t matter / But I know, I know better.” The last set of lyrics seems to refer to his fiancé Amanda Pacheco who is 12 years younger than Valderrama. Both of these songs are poignant as they highlight a larger issue within Hollywood. When did we start to become aware of these large age gaps in Hollywood and what does it say about these men?The Curse of Large Age Gaps in Hollywood RelationshipsBoth Swift’s “All Too Well” and Lovato’s “29” allude to the fact that it’s not their first time or last dating a younger woman. Gyllenhaal and Valderrama have indeed followed that pattern of being involved with women who are much younger. This is the same pattern that we see with DiCaprio. It’s strange that while many stand behind Swift and Lovato and their shared experiences in unhealthy relationships with older men, Morrone is the subject of viral memes. The sensitivity that we had with Swift and Lovato needs to extend to all women getting out of relationships, especially with older men.RELATED: Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown Has Powerful Words Against Sexualizing Her – And Hollywood Needs to ListenMorrone may not have been a minor, but she was only 20 years old when she was first linked with DiCaprio. Consensual relationships between adults are not always problematic, but we also have to wonder why men who are nearly 30 or above are attracted to 20-something-year-olds. Hollywood has never advocated for the safety of young women in relationships and we’ve seen this time and time again, including R. Kelly and his myriad of crimes against underage girls. Rather than denouncing these relationships or even being critical of them, they have been romanticized in the public eye. The long history of sexism and predatory behaviors in Hollywood has roots that extend for miles. Significant age gaps come with a gap in maturity, emotional intelligence, experience, and more which can make manipulation much easier than you may think. So, while age gaps aren’t inherently dangerous, they can turn out to host more harm than good.KEEP READING: Florence Pugh and Zach Braff Secretly Broke Up – The Reason Why Is Deeply Concerning

Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time. I want to thank my family, my team, and the staff at Cedars-Sinai who have been by my side this entire time. Fans and Celebs React with Love to Demi's Overdose - And It Shows Changing Attitudes Towards Addiction

Trigger warning: This article discusses subjects of addiction, eating disorders, self-harm and depression. As social media and news outlets were rocked by the shocking news of pop icon Demi Lovato’s apparent drug overdose, the outpouring of love, support and most importantly, understanding, shows how attitudes towards addiction and mental health are slowly, but finally changing. As the "Sorry Not Sorry" singer was treated with Naloxone, and emergency drug that blocks the effects of opioids, and rushed to the ER, fans, friends, coworkers and celebrities alike took to social media to express their support and convey their good wishes to the singer and her loved ones. With the U.S. in the midst of a drug and overdose epidemic -- 64,000 lives were lost to opioids, heroin and fentanyl in 2016 alone, nobody is safe from addiction anymore. Let’s not forget – so many of those struggling and those who have lost the battle started out with a simple prescription from a doctor for pain management. For others, addiction creeps in as a coping mechanism. They self-medicate to deal with mental health issues, emotional loss, career struggles and a slew of other issues. As for Lovato, the former Disney star has been extremely open about her struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, bulimia, depression and self-harm, something that garnered the 25-year-old a lot of respect and appreciation from fans and celebrities alike. “One thing I’ll never stop doing is being honest. That’s the best I can do,” Lovato said in the trailer of Simply Complicated, her brutally honest 2017 documentary. A child star of Disney fame, Lovato’s struggles started before the wave of fame brought her international attention. Brutally bullied at school – classmates wrote a petition for her to commit suicide – Lovato ended being home-schooled. But the trauma was already ingrained, and a tween Lovato suffered from body dysmorphia that took her into dangerous territory. For years she maintained a squeaky-clean image, but beneath the shiny surface her substance abuse was spiraling out of control. By the time she assaulted a back-up dancer in 2010, Lovato hit rock bottom. But that irreverent vein of honesty was already there. Unlike so many other starlets, Lovato opened up about her many issues and entered rehab. Like so often, she was initially unsuccessful. But Lovato was determined to regain control of her life, and not repeat the choices of her father, an addict himself. And suffering from bipolar diagnosis and substance abuse was not helping things. Emerging stronger and more self-aware than before, Lovato redefined her image, and continued with a happier and more honest career, taking all opportunities to spread awareness for addiction, mental health issues and body dysmorphia. In the process she became a strong voice for the many – so many – voiceless struggling with same things. For many fans, she was the only one who understood what they were going through, the one who could speak about issues affecting their loved ones and understood their pain. [youtube expand=1 site_id=26461365] Even as Lovato relapsed earlier this year, just as she celebrated six years sober, she remained honest, despite being fully aware of the backlash she would face. In the heartbreaking single "Sober," she apologized to her family and loved ones, and not the least her fans for breaking her sobriety. But she owned up to her mistakes and continued. And for those who’ve followed her journey throughout the years, there is a certainty that Demi will recover again and continue with fearless honesty.

Demi Lovato Gets Real About Relapsing After 6 Years of Sobriety, Fans Show Outpouring of Support

When fighting an addiction, people don’t speak in terms of cures or an addiction being “gone” – they say recovery is a forever process that you take one day at a time. If you are a celebrity, this is no different – except your struggle becomes a lot more public. Demi Lovato recently released the song“Sober”, revealing she’d relapsed after six years of sobriety, and broke down in tears while performing the song a few days after her revelation. The crowd demonstrated a heartwarming outpouring of support, chanting "We love you, we love you" at the end of the touching performance. Lovato shared her feelings in a tweet : “Tonight I took the stage, a new person with a new life,” she wrote. “Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. It will never be forgotten.” The outpouring of love continued on Twitter, with fans using the #WeAreStillHereDemi hashtag to show their support. Sober includes lyrics such as: “And I’m sorry for the fans I lost / Who watched me fall again / I want to be a role model, but I’m only human.” “There’s nothing like the truth. The honest to God, uncomfortable and shocking truth. Sometimes you have to share your story in the most honest way possible… for me that’s through music,” she tweeted in May. “Sometimes you have to end an era to begin talking about a new chapter of your life … I feel like I’ve grown more in the past two months than I have in years. I feel like a new woman and I’m so grateful for my life today.” Lovato, who is again in recovery, has gone through a lot of changes of late, having even changed management and PR companies. We wish her the very best, and we’re so grateful she’s being open and honest about her ongoing struggle – there’s many people out there she may end up helping with their own.

Demi Lovato Opens Up About Having Suicidal Thoughts at 7, Sends Powerful Message About Recovery

Last Friday marked Demi Lovato's sixth sober anniversary, and she made sure to tell her fans about it during a Brooklyn concert."Yesterday was a really big day for me. Yesterday, six years ago, I was drinking vodka out of a Sprite bottle at nine in the morning, throwing up in the car, and I just remember thinking, 'This is no longer cute. This is no longer fun. And I’m just like my dad. So I took a look at my life and I said, 'Something has to change, I've got to get sober.' So I did." But before taking the courageous steps needed to recover from addiction and becoming the advocate for mental health awareness she is today, the singer spent most of her life fighting dark, toxic thoughts.Lovato opened up about her struggles with depression in an interview with Dr. Phil, revealing that she even had suicidal thoughts as a young child:"The very first time that I was suicidal was when I was seven, and I had this fascination with death," the singer said. "I have experienced things that I’ve not talked about and that I don’t know if I ever will talk about. But at seven, I knew that if I were to take my own life that the pain would end."Editor's Note: Feeling hopeless? You are not alone. Please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).Being bullied didn't help with her depression, and Lovato started cutting herself, one of the many self-destructive coping mechanisms she developed throughout the years. She told Dr. Phil her mom was afraid of opening the door to her room in the morning because she didn't know whether she would find her daughter alive or not. Here's where things get inspiring. First, the fact that Lovato has been in recovery for six years and openly talks about topics like self-love and breaking the mental health stigma is inspiring in itself. But the words she shared with Dr. Phil after revealing the darkness of her struggles are words to remember forever if you're going through difficult times:"Reach out to people. Don’t hold it inside—don’t isolate. Reach out to people, whether it’s close friends, family. If you feel like you don’t have anybody, look within yourself and try to find that resilience that will ultimately get you through whatever it is you’re going through. Every single person on this planet is worth life."

Demi Lovato: Stand Up Against Bullying

Demi Lovato - Stand Up Demi Lovato shares her painful experience of being bullied in school, and talks about the importance of standing up to bullies whenever you see them. Transcript: "Somebody's older sister had said that I looked heavy and that I should start throwing up. "I was changing my clothes in the locker room, and all of the other girls came in. A lot of the girls, especially the bully-type girls in the school that were bigger than I was, that were taller, that were ready to fight. I ran out of the locker room, and I went upstairs. I just remember huddling in one of the bathroom stalls and hearing the other girls running up and down the hallway looking for me. If someone had done something and said 'Hey are you okay?' or 'Is there any way I can help?' or stood up for me in that moment when I was in the locker room, and everyone was ganging up on me, I think that I wouldn't have been affected as hard as I was with the bullying if somebody had done that. "It's important for every bystander to know that they have a purpose because they have the potential to maybe possibly even save somebody's life. If you see something going on in front of you, that's not right. You should stand up for what you believe in. You could be a hero for somebody if you stand up for someone."
