Megan King works busy 17-hour shifts on Sundays, rarely having time to interact with customers beyond serving them. However, during one busy shift, she happened to notice a woman eating by herself looking pensive and a little melancholy.

Something pulled Megan towards the woman. She went over to speak to her, spending more time than she usually would chatting and connecting with her customer.

She came in about halfway through my 17-hour shift, and it was on Sunday, which is always pretty busy. About halfway through her meal, it started to slow down so we chatted for a few minutes. Small talk, nothing too deep. She told me she was almost 70… and she just wanted to stop by an old favorite for a bite.

When the woman left the restaurant, Megan found that she had left a note along with the money to cover her bill and tip. The note said: “Thank you very much for your kind service. This was my first time eating out alone since my husband passed. I was hoping I could get through it.” Megan was floored.

She immediately started crying and took a photo of the note, which she posted to social media along with a selfie. She captioned her post simply: “in pain.”

How One Waitress Proved the Importance of Treating People With Kindness

Megan’s post went viral, with people expressing their sympathies to the woman and their gratitude to Megan for showing her a little extra kindness.

"That’s so sweet, same thing happened to me a few years ago... I sat with the lady until the restaurant closed and held her. Some people hurt in ways we don’t realize. Always good to be kind," said one commenter.

Many Twitter users were worried about Megan and sent her a DM to check if she was feeling okay after such an emotionally heavy situation. Megan countered that she was so grateful for all of the messages of support and was feeling great, she only wishes she had spent more time with the woman.

You truly never know what someone is going through. It always pays to be kind and compassionate to strangers because they could be in pain and seeking a little bit of human connection. Megan went out of her way to show extra kindness to her customer, and she really did change her life by making the woman’s “new normal” feel a little bit less lonely.
