Woman Who Was on Most Wanted List Didnt Hesitate to Donate a Kidney to the Officer Who Threw Her in Jail

The picture we are always shown, the one that is featured in movies and on TV, is of a convict being released from jail and hunting down their arresting officer for revenge. What we rarely hear about are the convicts who were stuck in a cycle of crime and feel gratitude to their arresting officers for forcibly breaking that cycle. How a Woman Completely Turned Her Life AroundPhoto by PixabayJocelynn James had spent years as a hardcore drug addict and criminal. She was in and out of jail 16 times between 2007 and 2012, dipping her toe in all flavors of criminal activity -- with the exception of murder. “I didn’t care about anything in life, and who I wronged. Robbery, theft, receiving property… Everything but murder, pretty much,” Jocelynn said. When she finally hit rock bottom, it was a wake up call. Now, she’s been clean and sober for a decade. She’s also made it her life’s mission to help other troubled women on their road to recovery. Jocelynn spent years rebuilding her life, and when she stumbled on a Facebook post in December of 2020, she knew that she had been given a second chance for a reason. A Fateful Facebook Post Would Help One Woman Make an Impact Terrell Potter had been her arresting officer on numerous occasions during the darkest years of her life. Instead of resenting him, Jocelynn credited him in part with saving her life. Without prison, she would very likely be dead. The post was made by Potter’s daughter explaining that he had kidney disease and would die if he didn’t get a donor soon. Potter had been searching high and low for a donor without success. He was on a transplant list, but it might take eight years to get an organ that way, and by then it would be too late. Immediately, Jocelynn knew what she had to do. Jocelynn got tested and found that she was a match for Potter -- her kidney could save his life! “I just knew that it said he needed a kidney, and the holy spirit told me right then that I had that man’s kidney,” she said. Jocelynn and Potter had successful surgeries, and the two were bonded for life. Potter was overwhelmed by the generosity shown to him by the former convict, and he knew from that moment on that she would always be considered family. “It’s like she’s another daughter. I mean, she’s just a part of us. It’s made a great relationship and a bond between us that can go forever. There’s no doubt about that.” Terrell PotterHow One Woman Showed Up as a Better PersonJocelynn James hasn’t stopped changing the world. She is the Founder and Executive Director of The Place of Grace, a non-profit that helps women recover from addiction and re-enter society as productive members. On the website, her impressive biography reads:“Jocelynn James Edmonds has been clean of opioids since November 5, 2012. She has made it her mission to help as many people as she can with substance abuse. Since August 2013, has had the pleasure of helping 803 women and 146 men get into facilities to seek help with their addiction. She also has an active jail ministry at the Franklin County Jail in Franklin County, Alabama that she started 5 years ago.”Jocelynn’s story is an inspirational one. It shows us that it is never too late to change course, or to show up as a better person. She is also an example of the healing power of helping others. Janitor Who Amassed $8M In Secret Shocks Whole Town After His Death

One unassuming man left a generous legacy for an entire town.Simple manBy all accounts, Brattleboro Vermont resident Ronald Read was a simple man who lived by simple means.Working part-time as a janitor at JC Penny, he drove to work every day in his most expensive possession, a $5,000 second-hand Toyota Yaris.Ellen Smith, who befriended him while working at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, remembers his daily routine.“He’d order the same thing each morning – a cup of coffee and an English muffin with peanut butter,” she recalled to TODAY.She also added that his wardrobe was in tatters. "He would wear winter coats with safety pins keeping them closed."- Ellen Smith, friend of Ronald Read His secret fortuneWhen Read passed away at age 92, his estate lawyer Laurie Rowell wasn’t expecting much."Initially, he told me that he had money and I didn't really think so because of the way he dressed," she told TODAY.She even recalled that despite his failing health, "he had parked far enough far enough away that he didn't have to pay the [parking] meter."And so, nothing prepared Rowell or Read's own family for what they discovered. The simple janitor had amassed an incredible $8 million fortune! It turns out that Read had a talent for stock-picking. Decades of shrewd investments and patience helped build his fortune.Along with that news, his estate donated $4.8 million to the local hospital and $1.2 million to the town's Brooks Memorial Library. The library's director, Jerry Carbone, was floored: "It was like a thunderbolt"Brattleboro Memorial Hospital's director of development and marketing Gina Pattison was equally shocked."To know that he was worth $8 million — and also that he left so much to this hospital — was just amazing, and incredibly generous," she added.Never judge someone by appearancesRowell recalls how important protecting his savings was to Read."He really wanted that money to be taken care of, because it represented so much of what he had worked for, throughout his life," she said. "He was very fearful of it being squandered."Yet, arguably, Read's biggest legacy is a lesson that we can all learn from. That is, never judge someone by the car they drive, the clothes they wear or the way they talk. Just like Ronald Read, they might remember your kindness and repay you in spades on day. You’re definitely getting a beer gut babe."- Shelby Johnson's boyfriend, per her TweetIn that moment, all of her insecurities returned, she shared."His comments did make me self-conscious. Why We Need To Talk About Sports Illustrated's First Asian Curve Model

Yumi Nu recently made history as the first Asian curve model in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. Yes, she grew up feeling insecure about her weight. Yes, it means something in terms of body positivity and inclusivity that she's breaking through barriers in her industry. But when chatting about these news, she also used the opportunity to speak out about profound issues people are struggling with right now, offering a refreshing take on topics ranging from social media burnout to Anti-Asian racism. Using her voice to inspire changeIn an interview with People magazine, Nu touched on her relationship with social media, and how she’s had to deal with the negativity often found online, but how at the same time, social media can be an amazing teacher and so useful. “I'll always have my hard days with it,” Nu shared, “It's an incredible tool and teacher in some ways, but can also be extremely draining.”How did she learn to love herself when it's so easy to find reasons not to by logging onto Instagram? In 2016, she went to Hawaii to visit her family, and she had a turning point and decided to enjoy the getaway -- and her life moving forward-- instead of worrying about not being stick thin and feeling ashamed. "I had this moment where I decided I didn’t want to look back and hate myself because I didn’t go in the ocean. I was so embarrassed. I never lived life fully. I never wore what I wanted to wear. I never actually felt free because I thought, 'I’ll just wear bathing suits when I’m a certain size." Or, "I’ll go in the water without insecurities when I’m a certain weight.' There were all these thresholds that I could never reach."- Yumi Nu told L'Officiel Shared sufferingNu also spoke about the fact that, in the era of the pandemic, people are sensitive to the kind of energy they are exposed to and the content they consume. “If I start comparing myself to others too much or I'm just feeling low from being on my phone 24/7, I like to take a break to do guided meditations or go on a nice walk. It's so important to connect with our body, mind and spirit,” Nu said. The conversation turned to the terrible rise in Anti-Asian violence, and what Nu is feeling right now about the crisis. She didn't shy away from sharing her opinions. “The Asian community isn't always a loud one,” said Nu. “Our society's view of Asians in the model minority myth lens has silenced us for many years,” she said. This is why Nu believes that it’s extra important now, and always was important, for Asian people to be heard and supported. “The division and racism in our world has gotten so bad; we've grown so far from love and connection. I want to create a space for people to feel heard and safe. That's my purpose on this earth,” said Nu.Using her platform to educate and encourage others Nu shared that she is “heavy-hearted” to see the terrible rise in violence against Asian people “who look like they could be my family members,” but she saw some positivity in the sadness –hope in seeing so many people coming together to support. “I encourage people to donate to AAPI funds and volunteer where they can, but the best thing they can do is listen. People want to be heard. Ask your Asian friends how you can show up for them,” she said. It's refreshing to see Nu use her newfound spot in the limelight to tackle hard, current topics head-on while also sharing a message of hope and unity for the future. Woman Loses 140 lbs After Being Denied Entry To Every Rollercoaster Ride

In 2017 Sophie Trewick was looking forward to a day of fun at the Alton Towers amusement park in Staffordshire, England. Instead of leaving with an anticipated smile on her face, Sophie left the theme park mortified but motivated to change.Trewick and all of her friends were given fast track passes so that they wouldn’t have to wait in the long lines to see if she would be able to “fit on each rollercoaster.”She decided to take her trauma and turn it into motivation Sophie was a 331-pound college student at the time and the Alton Towers staff believed that because of her size she may not be small enough to fit safely on the rides. Unfortunately for Trewick, the fast track passes would make no difference to her experience except expediting her embarrassment. Sophie was quoted telling the Daily Mail, “I felt ashamed and humiliated when I was turned away from each ride.”As if being rejected from a day of fun over and over again wasn’t humiliation enough, one of Sophie’s friends humiliated her even further. Sophie says of the moment, “It was so embarrassing. One of my friends actually said to me ‘I am glad you are fat as we get to jump straight to the front.’”I felt ashamed and humiliated when I was turned away from each ride.Sophie Trewick to Daily MailWhile the embarrassment and hurt was immense that day, it catalyzed Sophie to make serious changes in her life moving forward. Sophie is quoted saying, “I went home that day distraught, and knew I had to change. I joined Slimming World the same week and I have never looked back.”Slimming World is a weight loss program and community that approaches losing weight with a no-hunger eating plan, gently introduced activity, and an incredible support system. Founder Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE created Slimming World in 1969 in an attempt to provide others with a positive and different approach to weight management. Sophie clearly found the right weight loss program for herself because in the two years following that embarrassing day at Alton Towers, Sophie lost 140 pounds!Sophie’s struggles with her weight all began in her childhood when she dislocated a hip during gym class and was unable to exercise throughout her recovery. Additionally, at the age of 11, she became addicted to fast food, and her relationship with food spiraled completely out of control. As time went on, Sophie didn’t learn how to properly prepare meals for herself and she would choose to purchase takeout food from restaurants instead of cooking at home. Trewick was so self-conscious about receiving judgemental looks from her peers that she would take cab rides to campus instead of walking. Sophie’s main comfort foods of choice were Domino’s pizza, cheesy chips, bacon sandwiches, and chocolate brownies.Tiptoe if you must, but take the steps.Sophie TrewickBut now Trewick makes healthier food choices and her success can be seen in the many before and after photographs on her Instagram page. After the incredible weight loss, Sophie has even returned to Alton Towers and enjoyed the rollercoasters without the fear of being turned away from each ride. Her incredible transformation however is most evident in the brilliance of her smile and renewal of self-confidence shining through in her Instagram photos.Sophie's lifestyle changed drasticallyIn November of 2020, Sophie raised money for bone cancer by entering a fitness challenge requiring her to do 2,000 burpees during the month of November. She regularly shares her journey online through her Instagram page where she posts pictures of her adorable Labradors, her fiancée, incredible Slimming World approved meals, and of course, her radiant self!In a caption of a before and after weight loss picture, Sophie says on Instagram, “summers consist of long walks, bike rides, and fun instead of hiding away in my bedroom.” The caption tells a tale of a woman’s triumph but also years of incredible pain.Sometimes taking the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life.Sophie Trewick Sometimes motivation comes from unlikely places. When you take a negative and turn it into a positive, you gain control over your agency and this can change the narrative to your whole life. Sophie may have gone home distraught on that first day at Alton Towers, but within years of that nightmarish incident, she returned to the amusement park and finally had that fun and gleeful time she anticipated having back in 2017.There is victory in defeat- it only depends on how you look at itSophie owned her destiny. She did not let negativity get her down for long; she repackaged it to propel herself and made a change for the better. Sophie’s healthy lifestyle has transformed her life. In doing what she thought was impossible she has proved to herself and to any onlookers that change is within reach. While sometimes the events that motivate us to make those changes in our lives are traumatizing, upsetting, and hurtful, that doesn’t mean that we can’t utilize them to our advantage so that we can live fuller lives. Sophie took control of her situation and as a result, is living a positive and healthy lifestyle. There is victory in defeat if you look at it from a different angle. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. To quote Sophie herself, “sometimes taking the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tiptoe if you must, but take the steps.” Take the steps required to get to the place you want to be in life. Even if you start with baby steps, as long as you’re moving forward in a certain direction, eventually you will be successful!More inspiring transformation:This Man Lost Over 600 Pounds After Choosing To LiveAt 70, This Woman Defied All Odds By Starting Her Fitness JourneyThis Woman Lost Over 200 Pounds By Shifting Her MindsetThis Woman Lost 160 pounds To Be A Better Mom And Kept Fighting Even After Cancer Diagnosis
